Los Angeles is a glamorous city that often appears in movies, right?
However, since 2010, the homeless who were only in downtown LA have spread throughout the entire city, and the problem has become increasingly serious, leading to a truly critical homeless issue.
While living in Hawaii, I often hear stories about the homeless in the LA area on TV or in the news, but seeing the reality in detail is truly shocking.
The homeless problem in Los Angeles is no longer just about people on the streets; it has become a reality that extends from Beverly Hills to Santa Monica, Hollywood, and throughout the entire area. While there are some homeless people in Oahu, Hawaii, LA really seems to be an entire city plagued by homelessness.
Many people are living in tents on the streets, and there are many cases where cars are used as homes. However, the reasons for such a high number of homeless people are not simple. The cost of living is high, and rent for a two-bedroom apartment is around $2800, which is sky-high. Therefore, it is practically difficult for low-income individuals to find a place to live.
Moreover, the homeless issue in LA is not just about lacking a home; it is also related to mental health and substance abuse. The reason why government assistance often ends up being a waste of money is likely due to this. These are people who lack the will to rehabilitate and find it hard to engage in economic activities...
For them to return to society, they need a lot of mental and physical support. Unfortunately, it seems that there is a lack of support, and the systems in place to help them are quite inadequate.
Efforts to solve this problem are ongoing, but to be honest, looking at the response of the LA local government, it seems like it will take more time. Los Angeles is trying to build new housing and create homeless support programs, but solving the issues of housing shortages and high costs simultaneously is not easy.
I have thought about wanting to live in Los Angeles at least once, but seeing these problems firsthand is heartbreaking, and I hope the U.S. government can find ways to help them soon.
Homelessness can be resolved someday with government policies. However, the most important thing is that we should not regard the homeless issue as someone else's problem, but rather have the mindset to solve it together....
