The reason UNM Hospital is important is that it operates the only Level I Trauma Center in the state of New Mexico.

When we say Level I, it might sound like a high-quality hospital like a hotel, but it actually means that it is the highest level trauma center capable of treating severe trauma patients 24 hours a day. Patients who require multiple specialists at the same time, such as those involved in serious traffic accidents, gunshot wounds, or falls, are transported here.

New Mexico is so vast that there are many areas several hours away from Albuquerque.

There are cases where patients who are difficult to manage at local hospitals are sent to UNM by helicopter or ambulance.
