Have you heard about the recent changes regarding phone numbers?
I found out about it late, but I thought it would be good to summarize this information since it might catch some people off guard. There has been a significant change in the southeastern region of Alabama, including Montgomery.
The existing area code for Montgomery is 334.
This number was created when it split from the 205 area code in 1995 and covers 32 counties in southeastern Alabama. Cities like Dothan, Auburn, Selma, Opelika, and Prattville are all part of the 334 area. The time zone follows Central Time Zone.
However, an important change is coming. Starting January 23, 2026, local calls must be dialed with all 10 digits.
Previously, within the same 334 area, you could dial just 7 digits, but now you need to include the area code (334) to make a 10-digit call. However, N11 numbers like 911, 988, 211, 311, and 411 can still be used as 3-digit numbers.
Additionally, starting February 23, 2026, a new overlay area code 483 will be introduced. Those currently using the 334 number will not need to change anything. Your number and rates will remain the same. The 483 code will only be assigned to new subscribers creating new numbers. It is expected that the number resources for the 334 area will be exhausted by the third quarter of 2026, which is why the overlay is being added.
There is something you need to be aware of. If you have medical alert devices, security systems, or equipment set to auto-dial, you will need to change the settings from 7-digit dialing to 10-digit dialing. If you don't make this change, you may not be able to connect. Especially if you are using alarm systems or automated devices, be sure to check.
All major carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, provide services in the 334 and 483 areas. In Montgomery, AT&T has the widest coverage, and T-Mobile also performs reasonably well in urban areas. Coverage may weaken as you move into rural areas, so keep that in mind. While it may seem minor, knowing the phone numbering system in advance can make life easier. Especially for those who are new to the area, make sure to keep this basic information in mind!
