If you are planning to move to southern Alabama, I want to give you a heads-up about 'bugs.'
There are pests here that you may have never seen in your life in Korea, and they are quite common in daily life.
The first one you need to be cautious of is the 'Fire Ants.' They are widely spread across lawns in Alabama, and if you see a mound of dirt in your yard, it's definitely a fire ant nest.
If you accidentally step on or disturb them, the ants will swarm out and bite, injecting venom, which can be surprisingly painful. Usually, it just itches for a few days, but for those with allergies, it can lead to a severe reaction (anaphylaxis), which is very dangerous. Make sure your kids wear shoes when playing outside, and regularly apply fire ant control products in your yard for peace of mind.
The second is the notorious 'Mosquitoes' of the South. The warm and humid weather here allows mosquitoes to thrive year-round, especially from summer to early fall, which can be overwhelming. Additionally, they can carry frightening diseases like West Nile and Zika virus.
If you have standing water in plant saucers or corners of your yard, mosquitoes will quickly lay their eggs, so be sure to empty any puddles around your home immediately. When engaging in outdoor activities, don't forget to apply insect repellent containing DEET thoroughly on your family.
The third is the hidden danger of outdoor activities, 'Ticks.' If you've spent the weekend in a park with dense woods or tall grass, you should carefully check your family for ticks. Being bitten by a tick can lead to serious illnesses like Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which come with high fevers. Especially during the active season from spring to fall, it's wise to dress in thin long sleeves and long pants to minimize skin exposure.
Lastly, don't forget about the severe 'Allergy Season' in the South. Here, winter is short, and by early February, pine and oak pollen starts to cover the area in yellow. In spring, tree pollen, in summer, grass pollen, and in fall, ragweed pollen alternate in causing issues. If you have allergic rhinitis, I recommend visiting a doctor in advance to stock up on necessary medications. After going out, make it a habit to shower immediately upon returning home and put your worn clothes in the washing machine for added comfort.
While it may sound a bit scary to hear about life in the South, if you prepare in advance, you can adapt quickly and live comfortably. Don't worry too much and prepare well!
