However, Montgomery is located in central Alabama, so there are many great places for day trips that are closer than you might think. It's fun to explore a new neighborhood every weekend.

The most popular destination is Prattville. It's about 14 miles northwest of Montgomery, taking around 20 minutes by car. This area is very famous for golf enthusiasts, featuring the RTJ Golf Trail - Capitol Hill, which is considered one of the best public golf courses in the U.S. For those who enjoy shopping, High Point Town Center is a great place to spend half a day shopping and dining.

Next door, Millbrook is also a popular spot. It's about 14 miles north of Montgomery and has a charming suburban atmosphere. While it may not have specific tourist attractions, it's a nice place to relax and enjoy a leisurely drive.

Wetumpka is about 20 miles away. This small town is located along the Coosa River and has seen an increase in visitors recently due to the Wind Creek Wetumpka casino. In addition to the casino, the riverside scenery is beautiful, and the downtown area is nicely decorated, making it a pleasant place for a stroll.

If you're interested in history, I highly recommend visiting Tuskegee. It's about 35 miles from Montgomery and is home to Tuskegee University. This school is a symbol of African American education and is significant for its history related to Booker T. Washington and the Tuskegee Airmen. It's a place that greatly aids in understanding American history.

Selma is about 50 miles away. Many may recognize the name. This city is home to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which became a symbol of the African American voting rights movement in 1965. Visiting it along with the Civil Rights Museum in Montgomery provides a deeper understanding of modern American history.

A little further east are Auburn and Opelika. They are about 50 miles from Montgomery and are vibrant college towns due to Auburn University. There are many great restaurants and shopping options, making it a nice getaway when you want to experience a youthful atmosphere. There are also a few Korean restaurants, which is a pleasant surprise when you're craving Korean food.

If you can spare a bit more time, Birmingham is also a great choice. It's about 90 miles from Montgomery, taking around 1 hour and 30 minutes by car. There are large Asian markets like H Mart, shopping malls, and various restaurants, making it a popular destination for many Korean Americans who go there to shop once a month.

The roads are straightforward, so driving isn't difficult. You can take I-65 north to Birmingham, or I-85 to head towards Auburn and Georgia. US-80 connects Selma, and US-231 connects to Wetumpka, so navigating is easy with a GPS.

Looking at it this way, Montgomery may seem like a small city, but its location is quite advantageous. With historical sites, college towns, golf, casinos, and shopping all within an hour or two, it's a surprisingly attractive city for light weekend drives to new places.
