Boise is the capital of Idaho, with a population of about 230,000, and over 800,000 people when including the surrounding metropolitan area. It serves as the center and the practical heart of Idaho, with 40% of the state's population concentrated here.
The name has a unique sound in American geography, Boise... which means 'wooded' in French. It is also nicknamed the 'City of Trees.' Interestingly, despite Idaho being a dry region, there are many lush forests around Boise.
This has led to the story that the French explorers, upon first seeing the area, exclaimed "Les bois!" which is how the name was derived.
The Boise River, which runs through the city, is a tributary of the Snake River and is like a lifeline for the city. Parks, trails, and bike paths are well developed around this river, making the boundary between nature and the city almost imperceptible. Located at 43 degrees north and 850 meters above sea level, the climate is milder than one might expect. The average temperature in January is -1 degree, and in July it is 23 degrees, making winters not too cold and summers not too hot.
The average annual precipitation is about 300mm, which is relatively dry, but with good irrigation facilities, both agriculture and domestic water needs are not a major issue. Although the name is spelled Boise, locals pronounce it as [Boy-See] or [Boi-See]. If pronounced as [보이지], [보이즈], or [보이스], one will immediately be identified as an 'outsider.'

Even the official website of Boise State University states that the correct pronunciation is [보이-시].
For locals, this pronunciation serves as a kind of 'outsider detector.' The overall atmosphere of the city is quiet and peaceful. With over 80% of the population being white and stable public safety, one can walk around at night without much anxiety.
Once popular for its low cost of living among retirees and family migrants, the population has rapidly increased in recent years, causing housing prices and living costs to rise quickly. Particularly, there is a high proportion of people moving in from California.
Many come seeking a warm climate, low taxes, and a relaxed lifestyle, but this has led to subtle changes in the local political landscape. Traditionally, Boise has been a stronghold of Republican support, but recently, the influx of 'pro-PC' and 'pro-Democrat' migrants from California has created differences of opinion among residents.
On the other hand, there are also conservative individuals who have chosen to leave California due to dislike for that PC culture, creating a unique balance. Nowadays, Boise is evolving into a 'livable mid-sized city' from a rural town.
With good public safety, clean natural environments, friendly people, and increasingly diverse culture, it lacks the hustle and bustle of a big city but offers sufficient urban conveniences.
Boise can be described as a place with a solid sense of community in a small city, embodying the unique laid-back vibe of the American West.
