Summer comes to San Diego too.
Although it's not as sweltering as the Southeast, the sun is intense.
Living in a house without air conditioning by the beach, I deeply appreciate a shade, a breeze, and a slice of watermelon.
Recently, I went to Costco and saw mountains of watermelons stacked high.
"Ah, summer has really come."
In the past, I would put half of the watermelon in the fridge and eat it slowly, but these days, it disappears in a day once cut.
My wife loves it, and I reach for it first after exercising.
I thought I was just eating watermelon because it's delicious. But it turns out it's incredibly good for the body.
Watermelon is 90% water. Being able to replenish the fluids lost through sweat in such a tasty way is a blessing.
After playing a game of basketball under the sun... eating a slice makes me feel cool from within.
The red component of watermelon, lycopene, protects the skin from UV rays, and vitamins A and C provide moisture and elasticity to the skin.
My wife has been smiling brightly lately, saying, "Bring back more watermelon" for no particular reason.
Watermelon contains a component called citrulline, which helps with blood flow and reduces fatigue, and indeed, a refreshing glass of watermelon juice feels like it calms the body faster.
Among people who love to exercise, it's said to be natural BCAA.
It is also rich in potassium and magnesium and low in sodium, making it a fruit good for vascular health.
I'm the type who must have a snack once a day, and these days, I'm replacing ice cream with watermelon.
It has only about 30 calories per 100g, but it's filling and easy on the stomach due to its high water and fiber content.
The downside is... it's so delicious that I keep eating it. I buy a whole one and say, "Just a little bit," but before I know it, more than half is gone.
Every time I open the fridge, I can't help but smile – it's all because of watermelon. And the time spent with those who share it.
Isn't that the simplest happiness that summer brings?
