I haven't even finished putting up my Halloween decorations, and I've already received a health insurance renewal notice. If you live in Idaho, you definitely need to check your calendar this week.
Your Health Idaho's open enrollment for 2027 starts on October 15, 2026, and ends on December 15, 2026. If you enroll during this period, your coverage will begin on January 1, 2027.
Most states using HealthCare.gov have their enrollment period starting on November 1 and ending on January 15, 2027. This means Idaho's start is more than two weeks earlier, and the end date is a month earlier.
In fact, this year, the federal schedule has been a bit chaotic. A federal regulation from 2025 aimed to shorten the enrollment period to December 15.
However, in June 2026, a federal court in Maryland invalidated that provision. Following that, CMS confirmed that the federal exchange period is from November 1 to January 15.
So, if a friend from another state says, "I can enroll until mid-January," that applies to their state. Idaho has its own exchange, so the schedule is different.
Honestly, I was once caught off guard by this difference. While shopping for year-end sales, I thought I could handle insurance in January, but according to Idaho's timeline, it was already over.
After December 15, you generally need a special enrollment period. This means you must have a qualifying life event, like giving birth or losing other insurance.
This year, there are specific groups that need to pay attention. Those enrolled with PacificSource.
PacificSource will exit the Idaho marketplace at the end of 2026. So, those using this company's plan need to choose a new plan during this enrollment period.
In 2026, there were eight insurance companies, but in 2027, that number will drop to seven. The remaining companies are Blue Cross of Idaho, Regence, St. Luke's, SelectHealth, Molina, Mountain Health CO-OP, and Moda.
The state insurance department's notice states that if you do not contact them by December 15, you will be automatically enrolled in a plan selected by the company. Be sure to check the exact details in your notice.
We can't ignore the topic of premiums. The Idaho Department of Insurance has confirmed that the average premium for the individual market will increase by 12% in 2027.
There are significant differences between companies. Before subsidies, Regence and SelectHealth will increase by 9%, Blue Cross and Molina by 13%, and Moda by 23%.
Seeing the 12% increase made me calculate how much that would affect my coffee budget, and it turns out it's not just a matter of cutting back on a few lattes. So, this time, I've decided not to rely on automatic renewal.
At least there's some comfort in the state reinsurance program. According to the insurance department, this program has helped set 2027 premiums 16% lower than they would have been.
The subsidy situation is also different from last year. Congress did not extend the enhanced subsidies, which ended at the end of 2025.
So, don't assume that the tax credit amount you received last year will be the same this year. It's best to input your income again and recalculate.
Subsidies can only be received if you enroll through Your Health Idaho. If you buy directly from the insurance company's site, you will miss out on this benefit, which is easy to overlook.
If your income is below 250% of the federal poverty line, you should choose a Silver plan to receive cost-sharing reductions. Even if Bronze looks cheaper, it's worth comparing Silver first in this case.
This season, Your Health Idaho has over 143 medical plans and 22 dental plans available. While having many options is great, it can be a bit overwhelming when comparing them.
My method is simple. First, I check if my doctor is in the network.
Next, I verify if my regular medications are on the plan's drug list. The cost of medications can vary significantly between plans, so it's best to consult with your regular doctor or pharmacist for the most accurate information.
Finally, don't just look at the monthly premium; also consider the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. It's surprisingly common to save $20 a month only to end up paying several times that for a single hospital visit.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, there are places to get help. You can find certified agents on the Your Health Idaho site, and you can also call for assistance at 855-944-3246.
Personally, I think the option to choose from the marketplace is good. However, I wish the state government would promote it more, especially since the deadlines differ from other states.
To summarize, Idaho's enrollment starts on October 15 and ends on December 15. Forget about the January 15 deadline you hear about in other states.
This weekend, I'm planning to set aside some time to compare plans over a cup of coffee. Getting my insurance sorted out before Thanksgiving will make the end of the year much easier.
