Las Vegas is often misunderstood as a city lacking outdoor exercise environments due to its image as a casino city. However, it actually offers well-equipped spaces for a variety of outdoor activities, including walking, running, biking, and hiking. It is essential to consider the extreme heat during summer (June to September) and plan activities for early morning or evening. Spring and fall provide very pleasant weather, making them the optimal seasons for outdoor exercise.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is the top hiking destination located about 17 miles west of Las Vegas. It features red sandstone cliffs and trails of varying difficulty, suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Notable trails include Calico Hills Loop (approximately 2-3 miles), Ice Box Canyon (approximately 2.8 miles round trip), and Pine Creek Canyon (approximately 3 miles round trip). The entrance fee is $15 per vehicle (as of 2024), and entry is free with the America the Beautiful annual pass. There are also designated areas for cyclists, making it a popular spot for road cyclists. Arriving before 7 AM on weekends is recommended as parking fills up quickly.
Las Vegas Wash Trail is a multi-use trail approximately 14 miles long, developed along the Las Vegas Wash waterway flowing east of Las Vegas. It accommodates biking, running, and walking, with most sections paved for stroller access. The trail is popular among those seeking a natural walk, as it offers views of various desert plants and migratory birds. With multiple access points, it is convenient to use the trail for desired distances.
River Mountains Loop Trail is a multi-use loop trail about 35 miles long that connects Lake Mead, Boulder City, and downtown Henderson. While some riders and runners complete the entire loop, it is also easy to access sections for shorter distances. The terrain is relatively gentle, making it suitable for beginner cyclists, and the viewpoints of Lake Mead are particularly stunning. There are rest areas and restrooms throughout the trail, providing convenience for long-distance users.
Sunset Park is one of the most accessible parks in downtown Las Vegas, featuring walking paths around an artificial lake and well-maintained grassy areas. Many residents jog early in the morning, and it is common to see people doing yoga or stretching on the grass. The park is equipped with tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, and beach volleyball courts, allowing for a variety of sports. There is also a swimming pool (operated in partnership with 24hr Fitness) available for swimming workouts.
If you prefer indoor exercise, Las Vegas has several large gym chains, including 24 Hour Fitness, Planet Fitness, and LA Fitness, located throughout the city.
Planet Fitness offers an economical monthly membership around $10 and has locations in major residential areas like Henderson, Summerlin, and North Las Vegas. The YMCA also operates several branches in the Las Vegas area, providing family-friendly programs such as children's swimming classes and sports programs. There are plenty of options for indoor activities during the extreme summer heat, making it easy to stay active.
