I saw the news that a small jet crashed near West Palm Beach, Florida, killing all nine passengers on board.
The report stated that a Learjet heading from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas crashed near West Palm Beach and exploded.
Among the deceased was a 20-year-old female co-pilot named Natalia Gadelha Filgueiras.
Her mother revealed in a media interview that her daughter was the co-pilot of the aircraft involved in the accident.
In 2023, she obtained her pilot's license at the age of 17 while in her senior year of high school and was featured in local news.
Living in Buena Park, I sometimes see small planes taking off and landing near Fullerton Airport.
There are Cessnas and privately owned aircraft.
The United States is a country where it is much more common for individuals to learn to fly and obtain a pilot's license compared to Korea.
Some people start flying lessons in high school, while others dive into the aviation field as they enter college.
In the U.S., a private pilot's license can be obtained starting at age 17 after completing certain training, flight hours, and passing an exam.
However, a private pilot's license is different from a commercial pilot's license, and the qualifications and training required to operate a jet are separate.
So, when I saw this accident, what I was most curious about was not her age but her actual flying experience.
I wondered what kind of license she held, how many total flight hours she had, and how much training she received for the Learjet model.
Of course, it would be unreasonable to link the young co-pilot's lack of experience to the cause of the accident without confirming such information.
Aviation accidents can be due to engine issues, weather conditions, instrument malfunctions, or problems during the piloting process.
Multiple factors can also combine to lead to an accident.
Especially, jets have different operational characteristics compared to typical single-engine propeller planes.
They fly faster and at higher altitudes. When problems arise, the time to assess the situation and respond is limited.
What weighs on my mind about this accident is the fact that there were nine fatalities.
Unlike car accidents, when a major aviation accident occurs, most passengers can lose their lives.
Especially if a fire breaks out after a crash, the chances of survival decrease even further.
However, that does not mean that all small aircraft are dangerous or that flying in a private jet is reckless.
If she obtained her pilot's license at 17, she likely made significant career decisions early on.
It is tragic that a young woman who worked hard enough to be featured in local news during high school died in an aviation accident just a few years later.
From a parent's perspective, if their child chose a career in aviation, they would feel both proud and worried.
However, only the family knows what those feelings truly were.
This accident still has many aspects that need to be clarified.
Before investigating the cause of the accident, we should avoid questioning the pilot's age or jumping to conclusions about the aircraft model's defects.
