The news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are returning to the UK was a bit unexpected.
Weren't they the couple who had conflicts with the royal family and moved to America? According to the news, they have decided to return to the UK after six years.
However, after reading the details, I can't help but think that the issue of the children played a significant role.
First of all, the couple has two children. A son named Archie and a daughter named Lilibet.
Both are biological children of Prince Harry and Meghan.
Prince Archie was born in the UK in 2019 and is currently 7 years old, while Princess Lilibet was born in California, USA in 2021 and is currently 5 years old.
From King Charles III's perspective, they are both his grandchildren, and for Prince William, they are his nieces and nephews.
The name Lilibet was also taken from a family nickname of Queen Elizabeth II.
This time, the family is expected to live in a private residence outside of London, and the two children are set to attend school in the UK starting in September.
They are not moving into a royal residence, nor are Harry and Meghan taking on any official royal duties again.
They also plan to keep their home in Montecito, California, so this is a bit different from a complete return.
Harry has long expressed a desire to show his children the UK where he grew up.
However, he has argued that bringing the family to the UK is not safe due to security issues, and he even had legal disputes with the UK government over security matters.
Then, last month, the situation changed a bit. The family visited the UK, and King Charles met Archie and Lilibet.
It was the first time he had met his grandchildren in person since 2022.
I find this part quite intriguing. There can be conflicts between parents, and siblings can turn their backs on each other.
Harry and William's relationship is still reportedly quite cold. But when children are involved, the story changes.
From the perspective of the current King of the UK, they are his grandchildren, and for the children, this is a country where half of their family resides.
Moreover, Archie is already 7 years old. He is at an age where school life and friendships are starting to form.
Lilibet is also 5 years old, which is the time to start school. In a few more years, it won't be easy for parents to switch their living arrangements between the US and the UK.
That said, we can't definitively say that this decision was made "because of the children."
The couple hasn't officially stated that. However, considering that they are registering the two children for school and that the entire family has decided to live in the UK for an extended period, it seems natural to view education and family relationships as significant reasons.
Especially since this decision came after last month's meeting between King Charles and his grandchildren, it stands out.
It seems more about giving the children the experience of their grandfather and their roots in the UK rather than a complete reconciliation with the royal family.
Even if parents have complicated issues, once children start to grow, their perspectives often change. For Harry and Meghan, it might be that the experiences of Archie and Lilibet are now more important than their long-standing conflict with the royal family.
