Recently, there has been a popular meme-style video on the internet that parodies martial arts.
These short videos intentionally create a humorous atmosphere reminiscent of Hong Kong martial arts films. In China, this format is referred to as "沙雕武侠," which translates to "silly martial arts parody."
The basic structure of the videos follows typical scenes from Chinese martial arts films.
Usually, the story begins in a small teahouse where a master is drinking tea. Suddenly, a mysterious figure appears, often a wandering swordsman or an unidentified character. They question each other's identities, and a tense dialogue begins. Often, one character claims they have come for revenge for their parents or master, leading to a sudden fight.
However, when a quirky cat character interrupts, the seriousness is broken, resulting in unexpected laughter.
The dialogue patterns also add to the humor of the parody. In martial arts films, lines like "Who are you?" and "Have you ever defeated me before?" are exchanged. But when it changes to something absurd like "Have you ever defeated a cat?" the familiar pattern is disrupted, creating an element of surprise.
Moreover, the visual of the cat itself is funny. A cat appearing seriously among people while wearing a Taoist priest's headband is inherently unrealistic. This visual becomes a comedic point.
Particularly, the reason it has become famous on the internet is due to the awkward seriousness of the dialogue.
"Have you ever defeated a cat in the mountains?"
This kind of question should typically be a tense one like "Have you ever killed someone in a fight?" But inserting a ridiculous topic like a cat makes people laugh.
Additionally, many of these videos often feature watermarks indicating AI production or the editor's nickname. These videos are short and simple, making them particularly popular on short video platforms like TikTok or Shorts.
Ultimately, the contrast between the serious direction of martial arts films and the absurd content seems to be the reason these videos continue to emerge.
