Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, is a small city with a population of around 60,000, but it has been frequently mentioned in recent years due to news about attracting data centers. Recent market trends show that a new industrial axis is emerging alongside the traditional agriculture and military base-centered economy.
While the population of Laramie County has been increasing slightly but steadily, Wyoming's lack of income tax has consistently attracted retirees and businesses, supporting the population base.
Large tech companies like Microsoft and Meta have been building and operating large data centers near Cheyenne due to low electricity costs and tax incentives. Additionally, F.E. Warren Air Force Base continues to play a stable role in local employment and consumption, and interest from blockchain and fintech companies is gradually increasing.
According to Wyoming labor statistics, the unemployment rate in the Cheyenne area is in the low 3% range, similar to or slightly lower than the national average. While hiring in construction and technology related to data centers is increasing, the overall employment size is not large, so the changes are limited.
Efforts to expand the power grid and develop land for data centers are actively being promoted by the local economic development organization, and plans for an industrial complex near Highway 25 are also being discussed. However, there are concerns that housing supply and commercial infrastructure are lagging behind the pace of population growth.
Many media outlets, including Forbes' real estate section, often introduce Cheyenne as a beneficiary city of the data center boom, but there are also cautious views that the economy may be vulnerable to external shocks due to its specific industrial concentration and small-scale economic structure.
For Korean households, the low tax burden and relatively affordable housing prices may be attractive. However, the small size of the city and the limited Korean community, along with the concentration of the economy in specific industries, are factors that should be considered carefully.
