It was another tough night for San Antonio fans.
They started strong in Game 5 as well.
They even held a double-digit lead, but once again, they suffered a comeback loss.
In Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals, the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90, finishing the series 4-1.
Looking back at this series, it's even more shocking. The Knicks came back from double-digit deficits in all four of their victories.
In particular, in Game 4, they overcame a 29-point deficit, creating one of the greatest comebacks in NBA Finals history.
They also overcame a 16-point deficit in Game 5.
For the Spurs, it was a nightmarish series. They always controlled the early flow of the game.
On this day, Victor Wembanyama's dominant defense and Dillon Harper's offensive prowess helped them build a 16-point lead.
New York missed 16 of their first 18 shots, including 11 consecutive two-pointers.
However, strangely, the New York players remained unfazed. At the center of it all was Jalen Brunson, who was named Finals MVP.
Brunson exploded for 45 points, scoring 13 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to completely turn the game around.
He surpassed the 38 points scored by Knicks legend Willis Reed in the 1970 Finals, setting a new franchise record for points in a Finals game.
When Brunson joined New York as a free agent four years ago, not many expected him to change the franchise's fortunes.
But now, he has become a hero, bringing a championship trophy to New York fans who waited 53 years.
The Knicks' victory means more than just a basketball championship. The largest city in America, New York, has long been thirsty for basketball success.
While the Yankees in baseball and the Giants in the NFL have experienced multiple championships, the Knicks had not reached the top in over half a century.
The Frost Bank Center was filled with New York fans, and when the victory was secured, it felt as if Madison Square Garden had moved to Texas.
On the other hand, Spurs fans had to swallow their disappointment.
Wembanyama contributed with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks, and rookie Dillon Harper scored 25 points, but they couldn't surpass the experience of the Knicks.
Still, the future looks bright for San Antonio. They have young core players like Wembanyama, Caste, and Harper.
This Finals loss is painful, but it could be a valuable experience for building a greater dynasty in the future.
2026 Finals, still disappointing...
In the end, I believe it created a dramatic story that "the team that never gives up ultimately wins."
