The Grove, known as The Grove LA, is a complex that symbolizes the lifestyle of Los Angeles and is also considered a successful real estate case.

While the name 'Grove' may sound simply cool, it actually carries quite a symbolic meaning. 'Grove' in English means 'a small forest' or 'a place with many trees.' In the early stages of development, founder Rick Caruso wanted to create a space where people could feel 'nature and leisure' amidst the concrete and asphalt of the city.

Thus, he named it 'The Grove' and designed the entire shopping mall to resemble a small European garden. With artificial ponds, tree-lined streets, classic streetlights, and fountain shows, it was designed to evoke a warm feeling even in the heart of the city.

The Grove opened in 2002, located right next to the Original Farmers Market. This farmers market, which started in 1934, is an iconic market in Los Angeles where farmers sold their produce directly during the Great Depression. Caruso saw that creating a 'modern urban market' next to this traditional market would create synergy, leading to the development of The Grove project. As a result, the two spaces are now connected and operate as a single tourist attraction.

The real estate value of The Grove has steadily increased since its opening. It covers an area of about 600,000 square feet (approximately 55,000㎡), featuring shops, restaurants, theaters, a fountain plaza, trams, and luxury residential complexes. As of 2025, the real estate value of The Grove is estimated to be over $800 million, with annual visitors exceeding 20 million.

This means it attracts more visitors than Disneyland. The surrounding area's real estate value has also risen. Originally, the nearby Fairfax and 3rd Street were middle-class residential areas, but after The Grove opened, young professionals and foreign investors flocked in, leading to an increase in luxury condos, boutiques, and galleries. According to Zillow data, the median home price in the area has nearly doubled since 2010.

Economically, The Grove plays a significant role in Los Angeles' tax revenue. It generates annual sales of over $500 million and creates thousands of jobs. The brands present include major global retailers like Nordstrom, Apple, Nike, Sephora, and Barnes & Noble. Notably, the Apple Store within The Grove is considered one of the most impressive stores in the U.S., showcasing 'the aesthetics of space' with a harmonious use of glass and wood.

In terms of facilities, it is more like an 'urban resort where you can spend the whole day' rather than just a shopping mall. The central plaza features a fountain show where water dances to music, and next to it, a free electric tram slowly passes by. Designed to resemble a classic tram from the 1950s, it is particularly popular with families.

The cinema 'Pacific Theatres' is equipped with the latest screening systems, and after remodeling in the 2020s, it has been completely revamped with premium seating and a wine bar. On weekends, busking performances and pop-up stores take place throughout the streets, transforming it into a place to enjoy 'experiences' beyond just shopping.

When you visit, The Grove truly allows you to feel a slice of Los Angeles. Under the unique leisurely sunlight of LA, the scene of people carrying shopping bags, couples sipping coffee by the pond, tourists taking photos in front of the fountain, and vendors selling tacos and donuts from the farmers market resembles a small movie set. In fact, this place is often used for TV broadcasts and film shoots, and during the holiday season, tree lighting ceremonies and Santa parades change the atmosphere completely.

Of course, it is not a perfect paradise. High rents make it difficult for small local brands to enter, and the surrounding traffic congestion makes parking inconvenient, which are still considered issues. However, despite this, The Grove is a space that simultaneously showcases the sophistication and romance of Los Angeles.

The Grove LA holds more significance than just being a shopping mall. Its name symbolizes 'a small forest in the city,' and its philosophy embodies the leisure of people and space coming together. The real estate value has exploded since its opening, and it has had a tremendous impact on the local economy. That is the real reason why this place is loved by people.
