Living in LA, I often wonder, "How many adults smoke marijuana?"

Marijuana has been legalized for quite some time, and walking down the street, the smell wafting from various corners makes it feel like a common occurrence.

Statistics show that about 20% of adults in LA County, or one in five, have smoked marijuana at least once in the past year.

Especially among those in their late 20s to early 30s, the rate exceeds 30%. In contrast, it is about 10% for those over 60.

It is clear that younger generations tend to accept marijuana use more naturally.

For reference, this rate is about double that of areas like Texas. Why is the usage rate so high?

California was one of the first states in the U.S. to legalize marijuana, and now adults over 21 can legally purchase and use it recreationally.

There is no longer a need to smoke in secret or hide to obtain it. This change in environment has also influenced social perceptions. Nowadays, it is often discussed alongside terms like 'stress relief', 'natural healing', and 'sleep aid'. In fact, many adults choose marijuana over a drink.

Cultural factors cannot be overlooked. LA is a city centered around music, art, and the entertainment industry, with many creative professions. As such, a free-thinking mindset is prevalent, and there is much less stigma around marijuana use.

These days, many people enjoy marijuana in forms like vapes, edibles, or oils rather than smoking it like a cigarette. It produces less odor and can be used discreetly, creating an atmosphere where it is considered part of a 'lifestyle'.

However, just because it is legal does not mean it can be smoked anywhere. Use in public places is still prohibited, and using it while driving or near minors is illegal.

Additionally, many products sold in stores have high THC content, so beginners may experience dizziness or anxiety if they use them carelessly. Some may mistakenly think of marijuana as a 'harmless natural herb', but without knowledge of usage methods and dosages, it can be quite dangerous.

LA's marijuana culture varies significantly by generation. Younger generations view it as "just part of everyday life", while those over 50 tend to keep their distance.

However, as more middle-aged individuals use medical marijuana, those over 50 often approach it for pain management purposes. They tend to choose products much more carefully and adjust dosages meticulously.

Ultimately, marijuana is no longer a special item in LA. It is seen as just one of the options that has naturally integrated into urban life. Of course, not everyone smokes it, but the number of people surprised by the statement, "I've smoked marijuana," is gradually decreasing. The statistic that about one in five has tried it reflects how open the culture of this city is, as well as the increasing diversity of choices for adults.

While about 20% of the adult population in LA has used marijuana in the past year, responsible use remains important. As a city of freedom, LA has broadened its choices, but it has also become a time that requires personal judgment and moderation.
