When I moved from Chicago to Atlanta, the first thing I realized was, "Ah, it would be really frustrating to be without a car here."
While living in Chicago, I had access to trains, buses, and decent downtown connectivity, but Atlanta is so spread out that a car is almost a necessity for daily life.
People often think that big cities like New York or Chicago have well-developed public transportation, but Atlanta is completely different.
Although there are MARTA subways and buses, there are many limitations in real life. You can somewhat use them around downtown or the airport, but in areas like Gwinnett County, Suwanee, Duluth, and Johns Creek, it's not easy to live without a car.
At first, I thought, "I can just take the bus on weekends," but I quickly gave up. The bus intervals are long, and you often have to transfer multiple times to reach your destination. It's common for a trip that takes 15 minutes by car to take over an hour by public transport.
So in Atlanta, a car is not a luxury but rather a necessity. Almost every aspect of daily life revolves around a car, from commuting to grocery shopping, visiting the doctor, and attending school events for kids. This is especially true when considering the summer heat or sudden rain showers.
Interestingly, while traffic in downtown Atlanta is quite heavy and complicated, the atmosphere changes completely just a little bit outside the city.
As you head north towards Duluth, Suwanee, Buford, or Cumming, the roads become less congested, and you can feel a relaxed suburban vibe. It feels similar to the outskirts of Chicago but wider and more open. This is why many Korean families prefer these suburban areas over downtown.
So, if you bring a car from another state to this car-dependent area, you must register the vehicle within 30 days of becoming a Georgia resident.
You can handle this at the County Tag Office, and it's more convenient to make an appointment if you're in Gwinnett, Fulton, or Cobb County. You'll need your existing title, Georgia driver's license, proof of residency, proof of insurance, and emissions test results. The Georgia state government also advises that new residents must register within 30 days.
Costs can add up more than you might expect. One common point of confusion is the TAVT tax. When you register a vehicle from another state in Georgia, you have to pay 3% of the vehicle's value as a one-time tax. If you're buying a new or used car, a higher tax rate may generally apply, which can lead to the feeling of, "I just brought the car, and now I have to pay taxes again?" Emissions tests are required almost every year in the Atlanta metro area. The cost is usually around $25, and as of 2026, vehicles from 2024 and newer or those made before 2001 are exempt.
Electric and diesel vehicles may also be exempt depending on the conditions. And just because you moved from Chicago to Atlanta doesn't mean your insurance rates will automatically drop.
Recent comparison data shows that the average insurance rates in Illinois and Georgia are not significantly different, and in fact, the differences can be greater based on ZIP code, driving record, credit, and type of vehicle. According to ValuePenguin, the average monthly insurance premium is about $185 in Illinois and $184 in Georgia, which is almost the same. It is definitely cheaper than what my younger brother pays in LA.
The driving atmosphere is definitely different. While Chicago is complicated and rough, Atlanta is fast, wide, and chaotic. On I-285, I-85, and I-75, you'll find a lot of lane changes, and during rush hour, it can be really suffocating. Especially when commuting from Gwinnett to downtown, time is more of an issue than distance.
However, there are advantages. Parking is much easier than in Chicago, and there's less stress when driving in snowy conditions. On the other hand, there are many accidents on the highways when it rains, and drivers tend to speed, so defensive driving is essential.
