Living in Atlanta, you find yourself talking about sports more often than you might expect.
Even when meeting a coworker on a Monday morning, discussions about weekend games come up, and casual chats with neighbors often include mentions of the Braves or Falcons. In American life, sports go beyond just a hobby; they serve as great material for small talk.
Atlanta used to have teams in all four major professional sports leagues in the U.S.—MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL—but currently, there is no NHL team.
The main professional teams representing Atlanta today include the MLB Atlanta Braves, NFL Atlanta Falcons, NBA Atlanta Hawks, MLS Atlanta United, and WNBA Atlanta Dream.
If you had to pick one team with the most solid fan base in Atlanta, it would undoubtedly be the MLB Atlanta Braves. Their home stadium is not downtown but located in the Cumberland area northwest of Atlanta, called Truist Park. It opened in 2017 and has a capacity of about 41,000.
The Braves won the World Series in 2021, following their victory in 1995, and have long been a strong team in the National League East. As a result, they have a significant fan base not just in Georgia but throughout the Southeastern U.S.
One interesting aspect of going to Truist Park is that it's not just a standalone baseball stadium.
Right next to it is The Battery Atlanta, a large mixed-use commercial district. It features restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels, creating a culture where fans arrive a few hours before the game to eat and hang out before heading into the stadium. Even on days without games, people visit the area.
The NFL team is the Atlanta Falcons. Their home stadium is the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown.

This state-of-the-art stadium opened in 2017 and is famous for its unique retractable roof.
Falcons fans still carry the painful memory of the 2016 Super Bowl, where they led significantly against the New England Patriots but lost in overtime. Conversely, just knowing about this game can lead to lengthy conversations with Atlanta sports fans.
Another team that shares the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is MLS Atlanta United. This relatively young club joined MLS in 2017 and has drawn massive crowds, playing a significant role in establishing Atlanta as one of the leading soccer cities in the U.S. They quickly became a local favorite by winning the MLS Cup in their second season in 2018.
In the NBA, we have the Atlanta Hawks. Their home arena is the State Farm Arena in downtown.
They will also play home games here in the 2026-27 season. Basketball arenas are closer to players and fans than baseball or football stadiums, making it quite enjoyable for those experiencing American professional sports for the first time.
In women's professional sports, there is the WNBA Atlanta Dream. Founded in 2008, their primary home arena is the Gateway Center Arena in College Park, which is close to the airport. In 2026, they will also host some home games at the much larger State Farm Arena to accommodate the growing demand for spectators.
To truly understand Atlanta sports, you cannot overlook college football. Georgia Tech is located in downtown Atlanta, and the Yellow Jackets compete in the ACC. However, if you broaden the scope to the entire state of Georgia, the college team with the strongest fan base is the University of Georgia in Athens, known as the Georgia Bulldogs.

On fall Saturdays, college football discussions in Georgia are just as heated as those about the NFL. You can easily spot Bulldogs fans dressed in red and black throughout Atlanta, and even Korean residents who previously had little interest in college football will naturally learn about the rivalry between Georgia and Georgia Tech after living here for a few years.
In fact, sports serve as a great way to connect with people in the Korean community as well. Many go to watch Braves games together, and plenty of families attend Hawks or Falcons games. Especially if your children are attending school in the U.S., knowing a bit about the local sports teams can help you engage in conversations with them.
It's wise to familiarize yourself with transportation to the stadiums. While the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena are easily accessible via MARTA, Truist Park is not located right in front of a downtown MARTA station. If you're driving to a Braves game, it's advisable to reserve parking in advance for peace of mind.
Ticket prices can vary significantly depending on the opposing team, seating, and game date. There can be a big price difference between a regular season game and a weekend game featuring a popular team. It's a good idea to compare official sellers and verified resale platforms, and to check how to use mobile tickets in advance.
At first, you might not know much about baseball, and the rules of football can seem complicated. However, after living in Atlanta for a few years, you might find yourself checking the Braves' results and discussing the Bulldogs and Falcons in the fall.
That seems to be the fun of sports in America. Even if you're not a die-hard fan, once you start to know and cheer for the teams in your city, it makes that city feel a bit more like home. If you've recently settled in Atlanta, I encourage you to catch a Braves game and experience a Falcons or Atlanta United match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Watching on TV is definitely different from cheering alongside thousands of fans in person.
