When I first saw the movie The Blind Side, which was released in 2009, I wondered if such a life could really exist.
A large African American boy named Michael Oher, who was wandering around without proper protection in a poor environment.
One day, a wealthy white family takes him home and cares for him like family.
And as it turns out, the boy has a talent for football, which completely changes his life.
Especially, Sandra Bullock's portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy was striking. The story begins with her spotting Michael walking down the street in a t-shirt on a cold night and stopping her car.
Initially, it was just for one night, but eventually, Michael ends up living with the Tuohy family.
And he starts playing football. At first, Michael struggles to utilize his enormous size, but Leigh Anne explains to him to protect the quarterback as if he were protecting family.
From that moment, the scene where Michael starts pushing opponents aside becomes one of the film's iconic moments.
Ultimately, he becomes a college football player and makes it to the NFL.
What's even more surprising is that Michael Oher was not just a successful player in the movie.
In reality, he played at the University of Mississippi, Ole Miss, and was drafted in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL Draft.
He later played in the NFL and even experienced a Super Bowl victory.
Sandra Bullock also won the Academy Award for Best Actress for this role. The film was a huge success worldwide.
The filming locations heavily featured Atlanta and the Georgia area. So, as you watch the movie, you can naturally feel the lifestyle of the wealthy in the American South and the football culture.
The large mansions, private schools, football stadiums, and family life create a warm atmosphere in the film.

Many people believed that Michael Oher was adopted by the Tuohy family after watching the film.
The film depicts the process of him essentially becoming a family member. However, in 2023, a different story emerged through documents Michael Oher submitted to the court.
Oher claimed that while he thought he was adopted, in reality, the Tuohy couple had a conservatorship relationship that allowed them to have authority over his finances and contracts. He argued that he did not fully understand the difference when he was younger and raised concerns that the family profited financially by using his name and the film.
The Tuohy family refuted this. They stated that they did not deceive Michael and that the claim they made a fortune from the film was also untrue.
Ultimately, a Tennessee court terminated the conservatorship that had been in place for a long time in 2023. However, the claims from both sides regarding money and film profits have not been definitively resolved, making it difficult to accept the story we saw in the movie as the actual history.
So now, watching The Blind Side again feels strange.
When it first came out, it was perceived as a story of a poor black boy being embraced by a wealthy white family, changing his life with love. However, the real protagonist of the story, Michael Oher, has expressed dissatisfaction with how he was portrayed as overly passive and lacking in intelligence in the film.
From his perspective, there are understandable points. He was actually a player who was drafted in the first round after playing at the highest level of college football and survived in the professional league for a long time. The story of such a person was simplified in the film as if someone discovered and saved him.
That said, it's also hard to say that the emotional impact of the film is entirely false. Hollywood created a drama based on real people and real events. So, The Blind Side is a movie worth watching twice.
First, just watch it as a film, and the second time, watch it knowing the real life of Michael Oher. Then, even the same scenes will look completely different.
Perhaps the most interesting story in The Blind Side is not within the film itself, but rather from the moment the real protagonist began to tell his story again after the movie ended.
