Playing golf in San Francisco is a bit special. With the urban skyline, Pacific winds, and foggy hills, the atmosphere is distinctly different from other cities. While there aren't an overwhelming number of courses, each one has a unique character, providing several options to choose from based on your needs. Among them, the three most renowned and satisfying options are these.
First is TPC Harding Park. Located next to Lake Merced, on the west side of San Francisco, it is quite accessible from the city center. This is a PGA Tour-certified course, so standing on the fairway, you can easily picture the scenes you've seen on TV. Having hosted significant tournaments like the Presidents Cup and PGA Championship, the course quality is exceptionally high. Interestingly, it is designed to be enjoyable not only for advanced players but also for beginners and intermediate golfers, with well-adjusted difficulty levels. The maintenance is consistently stable, and reservations are surprisingly easy, making it a popular spot for both locals and travelers.
Next is the Olympic Club. The atmosphere here is different from the rest. Established in the 1860s, it is one of the oldest sports clubs in the U.S., a place that embodies golf history itself. It has several courses, including the Lake Course, Ocean Course, and Cliffs Course, and has hosted major tournaments like the U.S. Open multiple times. The course difficulty and maintenance are top-notch, and there is an overall sense of deep tradition and prestige. However, it is strictly a members-only club, so regular golfers can only play through an invitation from a member, making it even more symbolic.
