I recently compiled information based on my own research by area. As of 2024, the overall average for the city of Phoenix is roughly between $1,400 and $1,550. However, this is just an average, and the actual amount can vary significantly based on location and apartment amenities.

The most expensive area is definitely Scottsdale. Even older apartments start at $1,800, while new constructions or complexes with full amenities can go up to $2,200 to $2,500. Next, Tempe (near ASU) and downtown Phoenix are also on the pricier side, ranging from $1,600 to $1,900. Chandler and Gilbert are more reasonable, with prices between $1,400 and $1,700, considering they are good school districts and clean neighborhoods.

Relatively affordable neighborhoods include Peoria, Surprise, and Laveen in the west side of Phoenix. You can find decent 1-bedrooms between $1,100 and $1,350. Mesa averages around $1,250 to $1,450, which is a mid-range price. While you may have to deal with a longer commute, the advantage is that you can get a larger space for the same amount of money.

One thing to be cautious about is that in Phoenix, rental prices often do not include additional costs for water, electricity, parking, and trash disposal.

Especially during the summer, air conditioning bills can range from $150 to $250 a month, so it's realistic to add about $100 to $200 to the listed rent for actual living expenses. Be sure to check whether utilities are included before signing a lease.
