Surfing is not everything at Santa Monica Beach. On a sunny afternoon with a cool sea breeze blowing through the palm trees, stepping onto the deck and pushing off makes the asphalt glide smoothly, and you can't help but exclaim, "This is a skater's paradise!" Today, I've prepared the 'Santa Monica Skateboard Practice Area Guide.' Let's take a look at spots that will satisfy everyone from beginners to bowl enthusiasts.
The Skate Mecca of Santa Monica, The Cove Skatepark
Located at Memorial Park where Olympic Boulevard meets 14th Street, The Cove boasts an area of 20,000 square feet (about 560 pyeong). With a deep bowl, over-vert bowl, a 7-step stair set, and a pump track, the course layout is dense, making it especially loved by intermediate to advanced riders. Entry is allowed for those aged 6 and above, and wearing a helmet and pads is mandatory! It opens at 1 PM on weekdays and at noon on weekends, with special sessions for those 18 and older on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and a BMX-only session on Thursday evenings. The daily fee is $5, a 10-visit pass is $25, and an annual pass is $100 (for residents), making it reasonably priced.
Clover Park for Family and Couple Riding
For those who say, "I'm still scared of the bowl," Clover Park, a park-style area, is perfect. The entire park is surrounded by wide lawns and jogging paths, allowing you to enjoy both a picnic and skating on sunny days. The smooth concrete trail next to the south parking lot, low curb rails, and slab benches make it great for practice. There is no separate management office on-site, so bringing a helmet and water bottle is a must! After 6 PM, softball teams gather, making it somewhat crowded, so morning hours are recommended.
Hidden Street Spot, 'West LA Courthouse' & Beach Bike Path
If you want to practice rail and stair tricks, head to the West LA Courthouse on Santa Monica Boulevard. The flat granite floor, wide 4-step stairs, and low grind box have already gained a reputation among riders. However, the 'golden time' is before 7 AM—before office workers arrive, so you won't have to worry about being seen. If you're looking for a place with a better view, the Ocean Front Walk bike path that leads from Santa Monica Pier towards Venice is perfect. The path is flat and wide, optimized for push practice or cruising.
Equipment Shop & Board Repair Tips
Across from The Cove entrance, 'Rip City Skates' is an old-school skate shop that has been in operation since the 1970s, offering on-the-spot repairs from bearing cleaning to truck replacement. On the beach side, 'ZJ Boardshop' provides deck graphic customization and rental services, so travelers can come without their boards. Both stores are conveniently located within a 10-minute walk from the park and beach path.
Upcoming New Park & Safety Rules
In spring 2025, the Malibu Permanent Skatepark (20 minutes by car) will begin construction. Once completed, it is expected to offer unique bowl terrain along the coastline from 'Venice → Santa Monica → Malibu'! Lastly, remember—strong sea breezes often blow sand onto the track, so check the surface before riding, and be cautious as bike and electric scooter paths overlap at sunset. When riding at night, having a headlight and rear light is a great help in preventing accidents.
