The Los Angeles (LA) area has a complex social structure where various cultures and races coexist. This diversity has various impacts on the mental health of residents, and particularly, the Asian American community faces unique mental health issues and challenges.

The Asian American community has traditionally struggled to access mental health services due to stigma and cultural barriers surrounding mental health issues. These cultural characteristics make it difficult to discuss mental health problems openly, leading many to miss out on the support they need.

Efforts of the LA County Department of Mental Health

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) provides various programs and services to address these issues. In particular, they have deployed dedicated promoters for the Asian American community to offer culturally appropriate mental health services. These individuals conduct mental health education within the community and connect residents with necessary resources.

Koreatown Mental Health Center

Opened in December 2022, the Koreatown Mental Health Center offers professional mental health services for community residents. This center supports the mental health issues of Korean residents through rehabilitation services, housing support services, and outpatient care services. Notably, there has been an increase in visits from the younger generation, indicating a change in awareness regarding mental health issues.

The Importance of Suicide Prevention Education

In response to the rising suicide rates across the United States, LA County is strengthening suicide prevention education. They are mandating suicide prevention programs in schools and communities and sending professionals to conduct training. These programs are tailored by race and age, providing education that meets the characteristics of various communities.

Improving Accessibility to Mental Health Services

To enhance accessibility to mental health services, LA County is raising awareness of various 24-hour resources. In crisis situations, support and information are provided through the DMH Helpline 800-854-7771, and there is also a service for free crisis support via text messaging.

As the Los Angeles area is home to residents from diverse cultural backgrounds, access to and support for mental health issues is increasingly important.

LACDMH and the community are making continuous efforts to provide culturally appropriate services and improve awareness of mental health.

It is hoped that these efforts will bear fruit, allowing all residents to receive support for mental health issues and lead healthy lives.
