Living in the suburban city of Duluth, Atlanta, you encounter local police more often than you might expect.
The local police department plays a role in maintaining the quiet neighborhoods, commercial areas, and the relaxed daily life typical of the suburbs, rather than the rough atmosphere found in large cities. Although it is not large, it has a strong community-oriented feel and strives to maintain close relationships with residents. As a result, there is a saying here that "if the police are not around, it feels unsafe."
The first characteristic that comes to mind when talking about this police department is its practical approach to public safety. While serious crimes are not rampant like in big cities, lifestyle crimes such as traffic accidents, vehicle theft, minor assaults, and residential burglaries occur consistently. Therefore, patrol cars frequently move visibly around shopping mall parking lots and apartment complexes near schools. Because they focus on areas where residents spend a lot of time, many people feel that the sense of safety is good.
Interestingly, they pay a lot of attention to their relationship with residents. Police participate in local events, run educational programs for children, and offer citizen experience programs to create an image of "not a scary police force" but rather "a police force that is like a neighbor living together." In fact, at the annual Citizen Police Academy and youth programs, residents can learn about police cars and equipment and ask questions, which has received positive feedback. Perhaps because of these programs, it is common to see residents greeting police officers while they are on patrol.
In terms of scale, it cannot be compared to a large city police department, but it has a solid structure of specialized units. In addition to the patrol division, there are criminal investigation teams, traffic units, and K-9 (police dog) units, providing a variety of systems for the size of the city. An interesting aspect is that they also operate drones. They actively utilize technology in situations where it is difficult for people to move individually, such as searching for missing persons, checking traffic accident scenes, and securing crime scene roadmaps.
Of course, there are criticisms that the release of crime statistics is passive, and there are voices calling for clearer disclosure of arrest rates in relation to population and racial composition. While the small size of the city means there is less information available, it indicates that more transparent operations are needed as residents place their trust in the police.
Nevertheless, when evaluating the Duluth Police Department, many residents commonly say one thing: "They come quickly when needed and quietly protect us otherwise." It feels practical, and while it does not have the tension of a big city, it gives the impression that they respond immediately when an incident occurs. The safety of suburban life is ultimately made possible not only by the ability to prevent serious crimes but also by the sense of security felt in everyday life.
Since Duluth is one of the areas with a significant Korean population, this stable and orderly atmosphere of public safety becomes a major reassurance for those choosing suburban living. It is not a city without major incidents, but rather a city that quietly manages and protects issues, big or small. In that context, the Duluth police can be called the guardians of daily life, appearing when needed, even if they are momentarily forgotten.
