These days, while browsing the Korean internet, one interesting word frequently catches my eye.
It's the expression "click." When I first encountered this word, I paused to think.
It sounds like a mouse click, but I wondered why so many people use it online.
Once I understood the meaning of this expression, I felt the discontent of our era encapsulated in the internet buzzword "click."
Nowadays, when someone achieves a significant result online, the phrase "they clicked" often follows.
It implies that, like clicking a computer mouse, results are obtained without much effort.
Originally, this term comes from the sound of a mouse click in gaming. It is used to describe situations where results come from just a few clicks while playing a game. For example, in strategy games or auto-hunting games, there are cases where characters fight and earn rewards just by pressing buttons without complex controls. In such situations, users say, "You just need to click." In other words, it satirically expresses the feeling that the game progresses with just one click, without skill or lengthy maneuvers.
As this expression became popular, when someone shares stories like "I made money in a day with AI" or "I have a monthly income of millions with an automated system," comments like "that's a click" started appearing.
Even if there were complex processes involved, people perceive it as a result of "just one button press."
I believe this expression is not just a passing trend but reflects the reality of today's generation.
In the past, there was a relatively simple formula for society.
The belief was that if you studied hard, worked diligently, and saved little by little, you could eventually buy a house and live a stable life.
Of course, the process wasn't easy. But at least the direction was clear.
Growing up in Korea, I naturally heard the phrase "diligence and sincerity" alongside my parents' generation. The generation that created the Miracle on the Han River lived with that belief.
However, looking at the current atmosphere in Korean society, a different narrative emerges.
Especially regarding real estate. Many analyses suggest that for the younger generation, it is difficult to buy a house solely with their salary when looking at apartment prices in Seoul.
As a result, phrases like "if you're not born with a silver spoon, you're starting from a different place" frequently appear online. The perception that the starting line itself is different has become stronger.
Another notable word is "fall."
It is used to mean that one failure can significantly shake one's life.
As stories of stock investment failures, cryptocurrency losses, and business failures circulate, this expression is being used more strongly.
In this context, phrases like "click success" evoke complex emotions in people.
On one hand, there is envy, and on the other hand, there is cynicism. So people say things like:
"I heard that person succeeded."
"Really? They must have clicked."
I think there is a hint of bitterness in this expression. It also signifies that the belief that effort alone is enough has weakened compared to the past.
However, there is another perspective. It is also true that new opportunities have arisen with technological advancements.
More and more people are creating new jobs using platforms like YouTube, online content, and AI tools. For some, real "click" opportunities do arise.
Ultimately, times are changing. It is true that relying solely on old methods can be challenging, but that doesn't mean effort has completely lost its significance. The methods have simply changed.
There is an old saying, "You must follow the current of the times." When the world changes, the way we put in effort also changes.
Seeing the term "click" trending in the Korean internet, I thought about this. It seems that people today are standing somewhere between anxiety and expectation.
It is neither an era where everything is solved by effort alone, nor is it an era where one can do nothing. Perhaps we are standing somewhere in between.
