These days, I really feel like dating has become much harder after turning 30.
I often tell my friends, "Please set me up with someone," but when I actually get introduced, it usually doesn't lead anywhere for various reasons.
It seems like in the past, we often met people naturally at gatherings, but now social media has raised the bar too high.
Just opening Instagram, you see people traveling, fit individuals, beautiful faces, and those making good money all day long.
I know that this isn't the entirety of their lives. Yet, I can't help but compare myself to them.
Before going on a blind date, I always think the same thing.
"Being kind and sincere is enough."
But when I meet someone and lie in bed looking at my phone afterward, my thoughts start to change little by little.
'I wish he were just a bit taller.'
'It would be nice if his job were a bit more stable.'
'I hope he works out.'
'It would be great if he had some sense.'
'I wish our conversations were more fun.'
Then suddenly, I find myself laughing.
I wonder if I'm looking for a person or a male lead from a drama.
What's even funnier is that a woman's feelings seem to change several times a day.
On Monday, I think, "Personality is more important than looks."
On Tuesday, I say, "But I can't ignore first impressions."
On Wednesday, I think, "It's okay if he doesn't have money as long as he has a future."
On Thursday, I wonder, "But shouldn't he have some financial stability?"
On Friday, when a friend posts pictures from a nice hotel with her boyfriend, I feel a bit envious.
On Saturday, while walking alone on the beach, I think, "I guess being comfortable with someone is the best."
By Sunday, I resolve, "I should lower my standards a bit next time."
But then Monday comes around, and it feels like I'm back to square one.
I think men aren't much different.
After seeing so many beautiful or edited photos on social media, I hear that when they meet in person, they can be disappointed if things are just a little different.
If someone has a lot of travel photos, we assume their life is always glamorous, and if they post pictures of a nice car, we imagine they must be wealthy.
It seems we've entered an era where we judge people based on online images rather than reality.
When walking along the beach in San Diego, I see many couples holding hands. But if you look closely, not all of them look like movie stars.
There are couples in workout clothes holding a cup of coffee, couples walking with their dogs, and many who are wearing old hoodies and still laughing together.
Seeing that, it seems that lasting relationships are more about being comfortable with each other than meeting certain conditions.
On social media, you can browse hundreds of people in a day, but in reality, you only need to choose one.
Yet, we keep thinking the next person might be better, and the one after that might be even more suitable.
It's like comparing products in an online store and ending up not buying anything at all.
Then I open Instagram and see a tall guy surfing in Hawaii.
'Hmm... being tall is nice.'
A few minutes later, my thoughts change again.
'No, I think just having good communication is what matters.'
Then I see another video.
'But it would be nice if he worked out.'
It really feels like a woman's heart changes direction several times a day, like the sea breeze.
But the funny thing is, even with all this back and forth, when you meet someone truly great, you tend to forget those conditions faster than you think.
These days, I feel like dating isn't about a checklist but rather about the moment your heart starts to move.
