On the day we went to Redondo Beach, my husband and I were having lunch and taking a walk when I noticed something dark piled up on a buoy in the distance.
Upon closer inspection, I couldn't believe it... there were over ten sea lions piled on top of each other, taking a nap.
They weren't just lying down; they were literally stacked together. The one on the bottom looked like it was thinking, 'Ugh, this is heavy,' but it didn't move, while the one on top had its face buried in its belly, sleeping soundly, and another one was sprawled out on top of it...
But it was hard to see from far away. So I took out my zoom lens from my bag and zoomed in. The screen was filled with the faces of the sea lions, their whiskers like horns, dozing off and yawning with their mouths half open... Wow, this is like a spa for the sea.
They were using each other as chairs, cushions, and blankets. The one on top was comfortable, but the one underneath must have been thinking about its plight. Yet, the amazing thing is that no one fights.
If they were humans, there would be a struggle for space, and someone would say, "Why are you climbing on top of me?" But they just quietly endure and sleep. Seeing this makes you realize that animals are better than us in some ways.
When I checked the photos I took with the zoom, they were truly works of art. The slight moisture on their bellies, the fur sparkling in the sunlight, and the way they breathed in sync while leaning against each other were all captured beautifully.
It felt like a scene from a documentary. One of them was half-opening its eyes, looking at me as if to say, 'Is there a paparazzi here?' which was adorable, while another one was completely sprawled out, exposing its white belly, making me feel an urge to tickle it.
The tourists nearby also looked at my camera screen and said, "Oh my, this one looks so comfortable," laughing for a while.
The way the sea lions seemed to be snoring or breathing heavily was almost palpable. Watching them piled up in the sea breeze made me want to let go of all my worries. I thought it would be wonderful if we could live like that, leaning on each other.
Letting go of worries about money, time, and kids' homework.
Just being able to take a deep nap under the sunlight and wake up saying, "Ah, today is worth living" would be so nice.
The photos I took that day are still my phone's background.
Every time I see them, my heart softens, and when I realize I'm living a bit too hurriedly, they help me take a moment to breathe.
The sight of the sea lions' napping tower at Redondo Beach was truly unforgettable.
