When talking about Portland, we can't overlook the issue of safety. For several years, Portland's safety concerns have frequently made the news in the U.S., and residents' experiences are not entirely positive. According to data from Oregon, Portland's violent crime rate is higher than the average for major U.S. cities.
The most commonly mentioned crime-prone areas are the Old Town/Chinatown district and parts of downtown to the west. This area has a high concentration of homeless camps, and drug-related issues remain a concern. Notably, Oregon passed a measure in 2020 to decriminalize drug possession (Measure 110), but in 2024, it shifted back to reinstating criminal penalties, which has significantly changed the street environment.
In East Portland, especially around 82nd Avenue and some blocks in the northeast, it's often advised to be cautious at night. There are Korean residents in this area who reportedly live by being active during the day and avoiding risks at night. Crime statistics can be checked by neighborhood on the Portland Police Bureau's website.
Conversely, areas known to be relatively safe include Southwest Hills to the southwest, Lake Oswego (a city adjacent to Portland), and the Nob Hill/Pearl District area to the northwest. The Pearl District is a well-developed upscale residential area with low crime rates, and Lake Oswego, while an independent city on the outskirts of Portland, is preferred by families due to its good school district and safety.
Car theft is particularly frequent in Portland. Common vehicles like the Honda CR-V and Toyota can be targeted, and incidents of broken windows from leaving items in cars are common. It's especially important to develop the habit of keeping your car empty when parking in Portland.
Honestly, there is quite a significant difference in perceived safety from neighborhood to neighborhood in Portland. For those moving here for the first time, checking out local resident forums like Nextdoor or the r/Portland community on Reddit can help you get a sense of the current situation. It's not a city that is strictly dangerous or strictly safe; the difference lies in how you live in each neighborhood, in my opinion.
