These days, while studying the Bible, I noticed that the word redemption is used frequently, so I looked it up.
In the dictionary, it is explained with words like salvation, atonement, recovery, and repayment, but when I think about it in Korean, it doesn't quite resonate.
However, in Christianity, redemption carries a much heavier meaning. It is the concept that God sent Jesus for the sins of humanity, and we have regained the spiritual place we lost. In simpler terms, it feels like a salvation of paying off debts and regaining freedom.
Sometimes life feels like a dark tunnel. Living in LA, things move quickly, work can be overwhelming, relationships can hurt, and I can feel disappointed in myself. Now that I'm 35, I find myself thinking thoughts I didn't have before.
"Am I okay right now? Am I missing something?" These questions sometimes quietly rise from the depths of my heart.
At those times, the word redemption strangely feels comforting. Perhaps because of its nuance of 'regaining and recovering,' it gives the impression that even if we are not perfect, we can start again.
We make mistakes, feel regret, and sometimes blame ourselves, but within faith, it is said that we can rise again because God has already paid the price. Just that thought makes my heart feel a bit more at ease.
And when I think about it, redemption doesn't seem to be used only for major religious events. When I feel like I've ruined a day, the moment I gather my thoughts again, the courage to reach out first to a distant friend, or the day I start exercising again after giving up several times can also be called small redemptions in daily life.
Interestingly, in conversation, redemption is used much more lightly. While 'salvation' is correct in a religious sense, in everyday life, it is usually closer to meanings like making up, bouncing back, or restoring honor. It fits perfectly in situations where something has gone wrong but is being recovered well. For example, in conversation:
-
"This is my redemption." → This time, I will do it right.
-
"I need redemption after yesterday." → I messed up yesterday, so I need to make up today.
-
"Coffee was my redemption for being late." → I made up for being late by bringing coffee, haha.
-
"This match is his redemption." → This match is his chance to restore his honor.
-
"She's looking for redemption after that mistake." → She's trying to make up after the mistake.
Among drama fans, the term "redemption arc" is also used a lot. It refers to a story where a failed character grows and makes a great comeback or ends in sacrifice. This is exactly redemption.
Ultimately, I think of redemption as the power to rebuild what has collapsed and regain what has been lost.
