The city of Phoenix experiences sandstorms known as Haboobs quite frequently every summer.
Every summer during the monsoon season, several occurrences are guaranteed, and when combined, residents witness this phenomenon multiple times in a season.
While it is not an unfamiliar sight for Arizonans, facing it directly can still be an overwhelming experience.
The sky can be clear one moment, and suddenly a massive wall of brownish-yellow dust rushes in, with speed and power beyond imagination.
The Haboob sandstorm is not just strong winds; the air is filled with dust to the point where it is hard to breathe.
When you actually enter the storm, the dust is so thick that visibility is almost zero, not just hazy like fog.
Often, you can't even see the brake lights of the car right in front of you.
After the storm passes, a significant amount of sand and dirt accumulates on the car's surface, making it look as if the car was dipped in muddy water.
Sand gets into the windows, wiper gaps, around door handles, and even inside the engine compartment.
Due to the strong winds, scratches can be left on the car paint, and if wiped incorrectly, it can cause further damage.
The long lines at car washes the morning after a Haboob is also due to this.
It's not just the exterior that gets dirty; if sand accumulates in the air intake or filters, it can affect the car's performance, making cleaning essential.
On the evening of August 25, 2025, the Phoenix area was swept by a massive Haboob.
The sight of a sand cloud dozens of meters high engulfing the city looked like a scene from a sci-fi movie.
Videos taken from rooftops and office windows quickly spread, showing the streets and playgrounds turning dark in just a few seconds.
The problem is that this Haboob did not end merely as a spectacle. Following the sandstorm, powerful thunderstorms and gusts caused significant damage throughout Phoenix.
Such Haboobs leave both large and small damages each time. Building exteriors or roofs can be damaged, the risk of accidents on the roads increases, and power outages are a common consequence. Additionally, fine dust spreads throughout the city, affecting residents' respiratory health.
It can cause great suffering for those with asthma or allergies. Arizonans have precautions in place when a Haboob occurs. They refrain from going out, set their car air conditioning to recirculate, and tightly seal windows and door gaps as a basic measure.
However, amidst the danger, Haboobs are recorded as a unique natural phenomenon of Arizona.
