Overcoming Adversity to Spread Laughter and Hope: The Life Story of Lee Sang-yong, Popeye
Born in 1944 into a poor family in Seocheon, Chungcheongnam-do, Lee Sang-yong was frail enough at birth to be considered at risk of death. Due to malnutrition and being born premature, his family almost gave up on him and attempted to bury him, but his twelve-year-old aunt miraculously saved him by taking him out of the ground at night. Surviving against the odds, Lee struggled with illness throughout his childhood and was so weak that he only took his first steps at the age of six. However, determined to overcome adversity, he began bodybuilding as a teenager and regained his health, already performing as a bodybuilder during high school. While attending Korea University, he gained attention by being named "Mr. Korea University" at a campus bodybuilding competition, transforming from a sickly boy into a strong young man through hard work.
After graduating from university, Lee was commissioned as an officer in the Army through the ROTC program. Despite his short stature, he chose the armored corps due to his exceptional physical strength and determination, serving as a tank platoon leader. After being commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1967, he participated in the Vietnam War for a year. After being discharged as a first lieutenant in March 1970, he had to work various jobs, including as a salesman and insurance planner, to support his family.
His life took a turn when he began to hear from those around him that he had a talent for entertainment. Believing in his abilities, Lee, then a struggling young man, sought out his hometown senior and MBC producer Yoo Soo-yeol without any prior connections. With a strong desire to showcase his lifelong physical strength and talent on stage, he embarked on a new challenge.
Broadcasting Debut and the Birth of the Nickname Popeye
In 1971, Lee made his broadcasting debut by taking the microphone as a production assistant at CBS Christian Broadcasting. In 1973, he seized an audition opportunity for the MBC entertainment program "Cheerful Blue and White Battle," where, despite being an unknown newcomer, he poured all his talents into the performance. Lee later recalled, "I showcased all my skills among top stars like Gu Bong-seo, Bae Sam-ryong, and Seo Young-chun." He appeared on this program multiple times, impressing audiences with his unique performances, including showcasing his muscles, breaking bricks, and bouncing his chest muscles. Thanks to his energetic and humorous displays of strength, he gradually became known by the nickname "Popeye," which became his trademark. The emergence of this strong and cheerful new MC left a strong impression on viewers, and Lee slowly built his recognition as a broadcaster.
Lee's unrestrained talent and energy also shone on stages for children. Starting in 1975, he became the MC for KBS's children's singing contest program "Let's Sing Together," captivating children's hearts with his bright and energetic hosting. He hosted this program, which aired every Sunday, for an impressive nine years, becoming a beloved figure known as "Uncle Popeye" to children across the nation. His muscular arms and passionate hosting style earned him this nickname, but it was his ability to connect with children and bring them joy that made him a hero in their eyes. Children would often salute him instead of saying hello when they encountered him on the street, showcasing his status as a beloved figure among the youth. Thus, the character of Popeye Lee Sang-yong was born, making him one of the most beloved national MCs of the 1970s and 1980s.
Peak as a Broadcaster – Stage of Friendship and National MC
Among Lee's broadcasting career highlights, his time as the host of MBC's military entertainment program "Stage of Friendship" stands out. Selected as the host when the program began in 1989, he was recognized for his background as an officer, allowing him to understand military culture well. This program featured live broadcasts from military bases across the country, gaining explosive popularity in the early 1990s. Lee would energize the atmosphere at the start of each episode with his powerful greeting, "To all viewers across the nation and soldiers~ Loyalty!" which was met with enthusiastic responses from the soldiers. His catchphrases, such as "Forward to Hometown, Start!" and "You are the reason for South Korea's existence," became famous during that time. This stage, which provided laughter and comfort to young soldiers in uniform, remained Lee's best program of his life.
Each episode of "Stage of Friendship" was filled with touching moments. In particular, during the "Missing Mother" segment, Lee's mother would surprise the soldiers by appearing in front of them with their eyes covered. Lee would ask, "Do you think your mother has come?" and the soldier would respond with a trembling voice, "Yes, it is definitely my mother!" This scene always brought peak emotional moments. The sight of a son embracing his mother for the first time during his long military service, crying, while Lee watched with tears in his eyes, often brought viewers to tears as well. Leading the "Stage of Friendship" from 1989 to 1997, Lee enjoyed peak popularity as a beloved national MC, receiving love from the entire nation.
Love for Children and Social Service Activities
Having hosted children's programs for a long time, Lee took the initiative to help underprivileged children early on. While hosting "Let's Sing Together" in the 1980s, a child suffering from a heart condition visited the filming site. Lee did not turn away from the sick child and worked tirelessly to raise funds for the surgery, which led him to establish the Korean Children's Protection Association. Since then, he has worked hard to find sponsors and raise funds for young patients who could not receive treatment due to financial difficulties. Over 16 years, he gifted new life to hundreds of children and became a "real Santa" for those suffering from severe illnesses, including heart disease. In recognition of his contributions, he received the National Medal of Merit in 1987, receiving gratitude from the state. His efforts to give back to society from the love he received through broadcasting became a model for many people.
Meanwhile, since the 1970s, Lee has actively participated in various charity performances alongside famous comedians and singers. In 1974, he even held a one-man show to help patients with Hansen's disease, demonstrating his commitment to helping those in need beyond broadcasting. However, trials also came to Lee, as allegations arose in late 1996 that he had embezzled funds raised for children's surgeries. Accused of wrongdoing for something he had done out of goodwill, he was forced to step down from his beloved role as the MC of "Stage of Friendship." Fortunately, after three months of investigation, he was cleared of all charges in February 1997, but the wounds from the misunderstanding were deep. He later confessed that he carried the prosecutor's certificate of non-indictment, stating "no charges," close to his heart, which saddened those around him. Nevertheless, he endured this hardship quietly and maintained the value of the children's aid movement he had started.
New Challenges – Adult Comedy and Various Activities
After taking a brief hiatus from broadcasting, Lee embarked on a new challenge, utilizing his unique sense of humor. In 1999, he released an adult comedy album titled "Popeye Lee Sang-yong's Laugh Train" with junior comedian Moon Young-mi, stepping into a new stage of laughter. Moving beyond the clean and cheerful image established through children's programs, his venture into adult comedy content sparked curiosity among many. The album featured humor and performances with somewhat provocative themes, opening a new world of laughter for Lee. Additionally, he appeared on various entertainment programs such as KBS's "National Singing Contest" and MBC's "Start East, West, South, North," showcasing his still-sharp wit. He continued to be active as a host for local festivals and public broadcasts, and on cable channel MBN, he hosted programs like "Popeye's Paldo Travel" and on local broadcast T-Broad, "Let's Go! Into the Market," bringing laughter and memories to various generations.
Since the late 1990s, Lee's broadcasting activities were not as glamorous as during his peak, but he continued to meet the public with a spirit of constant challenge and change. In the 2000s, he hosted programs primarily for seniors, such as MBC's "Evergreen Life" (2008-2014), providing comfort and joy to elderly audiences. He also actively participated as an MC and lecturer for various events across the country, maintaining his reputation as the "national MC who runs to any event." Even as time passed, his humor and charm remained, captivating the hearts of people of all ages.
Passion and Endless Inspiration in Old Age
Even in his old age, Lee's life was filled with passion. Having avoided alcohol and cigarettes throughout his life and exercising daily, he maintained robust health even after turning seventy. In fact, even in his mid-70s, he shocked everyone by lifting a 50kg dumbbell over 600 times a day, showcasing remarkable self-discipline for over 60 years. Thanks to such consistent efforts, even as he approached his eighties, he continued to be active, handling dozens of events and lectures each month. As he said, "I have many things to do in my life. There were times I did 3-4 events a day," Lee spent his old age with a passion for work and youthful energy, spreading positive energy to those around him.
Longtime juniors and viewers looked at him with respect and love. At the 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of MBC entertainment, stars from a past era were invited, and Lee also took the stage as a special presenter. When the octogenarian "Uncle Popeye" appeared with a bright smile wearing a red bow tie, the audience erupted in applause. From comedians he had worked with in his youth to junior entertainers who grew up watching him on TV, everyone united in paying tribute to the legendary MC. That day, Lee left a touching remark on stage, saying, "Laughter grows bigger the more you share it," once again resonating deeply with the public.
On May 9, 2025, Lee Sang-yong passed away at the age of 81 due to sudden cardiac arrest. Many were shocked and saddened, as he had always boasted of his good health without any chronic illnesses. Although he has now left us, the story of a poor and frail child who rose above adversity to bring laughter and hope to the people will be remembered forever. The eternal Popeye Lee Sang-yong, who always shouted "Loyalty!" while spreading laughter – his warm heart and passion will remain a great inspiration and source of emotion for those left behind for a long time.
