When you think of Las Vegas, you usually picture casinos, hotels, international shows, and events like F1.
However, living here is a bit different from what you might expect.
For many tourists, it's a city to visit for a few days, but for those who settle down, managing a household, sending kids to school, grocery shopping, and paying utility bills presents a different reality.
In terms of living expenses, Las Vegas is said to be slightly above the national average, and that's how it feels.
The cost of living index is about 5% higher than the national average.
It's not as prohibitively expensive as cities like New York or LA, but it's not exactly cheap either.
Especially in recent years, the influx of people moving from California, LA, and San Diego has caused rent and home prices to rise compared to the past.
Rent for a one-bedroom apartment varies by area, but you should expect to pay around $1,150 to $1,400 per month.
If you have a family, you'll obviously need a larger home, which increases the burden.
However, there are relatively quiet and family-friendly neighborhoods like Henderson, Summerlin, and North Las Vegas. Many Korean residents live in these areas.
One advantage of living in Nevada is that there is no state income tax. For dual-income households or those with a decent income, this is definitely noticeable.
On the other hand, the sales tax on purchases isn't low, so buying big-ticket items like furniture, appliances, or cars can be a bit of a burden.
Honestly, the educational environment for children isn't particularly rich. The city is built on a desert, so it lacks the dense cultural offerings of museums, forests, and historic neighborhoods found in Eastern or coastal California cities. For parents raising kids, it can sometimes feel a bit sparse.

That said, if you look around, there are mountains and facilities for camping within an hour's drive.
Places like Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston, and Lake Mead have plenty of campgrounds, making it nice for a weekend getaway. As long as you avoid the summer heat, it's quite pleasant for family outings.
Grocery shopping isn't as bad as you might think. Korean markets like H Mart have opened up, and there are many local stores like Greenland, so finding ingredients isn't a major hassle. For a family of four, grocery costs are likely at the national average.
Personally, the two things to be most cautious about while living in Las Vegas are gambling and the summer heat.
Since casinos are nearby, even if you start out just looking around, it can become a habit and lead to addiction, which can disrupt your life. The area is filled with slot machines from the airport to gas stations.
So, residents need to be very careful about gambling. Over time, casinos can feel less like special places and more like neighborhood facilities, which is when you need to be even more cautious.
Typically, there are many gambling issues among Korean men and women who live alone after losing their husbands. This is often discussed in church.
And then there's the summer electric bill... that's a problem too. The summer heat in Las Vegas feels like the desert heat enveloping your entire home.
Not every house has a pool, so electric bills can spike during the summer, so it's good to anticipate this before moving. Winters are relatively mild, so heating costs are lower, but summer cooling costs can offset that difference.
Ultimately, Las Vegas isn't a bad place to live. If you're careful about gambling, manage your air conditioning well in the summer, and get used to the lifestyle of a tourist city, living here isn't a major issue. However, if you only see the glamorous tourist image, you might be disappointed.
This place is a city for tourists, but for some, it's a city where they live ordinary lives, doing grocery shopping, cooking, and helping kids with homework.
This was just the ramblings of someone trying to save up money to buy a house in Henderson. Thank you for reading.
