On September 30, 2025, a large-scale project at Grand Sierra Resort located in Reno will commence.
This will be the construction of a 10,000-seat arena, which is a remarkable project scale for the area.
The arena is planned to be built as a 300,000 square foot complex entertainment space that includes suites and a luxury hospitality club.
Completion is scheduled for late summer 2027, and it is expected to inject new vitality into the local tourism industry. This project will be located near the intersection of Interstate 80 and Highway 395, close to downtown Reno. Thanks to its excellent transportation accessibility, it is expected to become a new landmark capable of hosting large concerts and sports events simultaneously.
Grand Sierra Resort has formalized a strategic partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno through this project. The resort stated to the local newspaper Reno Gazette-Journal, "This project will bring transformation not only to our resort but also to the University of Nevada and the entire northern Nevada region."
The key to the partnership is that this arena will serve as the home court for the University of Nevada men's basketball team. It is expected to become an iconic space that connects the university and the local community. Additionally, the resort site will expand the golf practice area 'Grand Bay Driving Range' to create new golf facilities and walking paths, and a year-round community ice rink will also be installed.
This is evolving into a comprehensive leisure complex that can be enjoyed by both local residents and tourists. The resort also plans to build a new hotel tower with 800 additional rooms to meet the increasing demand for accommodations.
The total investment for this project is expected to be around $1 billion, which will be recorded as the largest private capital investment in Reno's history. Notably, this funding is reported to have been secured through tax incentives that were controversial earlier this year. The Reno City Council approved $61 million in public tax incentives, and the resort will receive 90% of property tax refunds until 2035 under the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) program.
Through these extraordinary tax benefits, the resort has been able to reduce its financial burden and strengthen its long-term revenue model. While there are criticisms regarding public tax support, local economic experts evaluate that this project will have positive effects in various aspects, including attracting tourists, creating jobs, and expanding infrastructure.
In particular, thousands of visitors are expected to flock to Reno during the college basketball season and major concerts, which is likely to lead to revitalization of the surrounding commercial areas. After its completion in 2027, Reno may become a turning point in establishing itself as a 'sports & entertainment hub' rather than just a 'casino city.'
Under the skies of northern Nevada, we look forward to seeing what the new landmark built on this land, where desert and mountains meet, will look like in Grand Sierra Resort's bold challenge.
