On September 10, news broke that Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while giving a speech outdoors at Utah Valley University.

He lost his life from a single shot, and while many speculated it would be a semi-automatic rifle like the AR-15, it turned out a completely different firearm was used.

The firearm recovered from the crime scene was an old Mauser .30-06 caliber bolt-action rifle.

A bolt-action rifle requires the user to manually pull the bolt handle to eject the spent cartridge and chamber a new round each time a shot is fired.

To explain simply, the user pushes the bolt to chamber a round, pulls the trigger to fire, then pulls the bolt to eject the spent cartridge and chamber another round.

In other words, it does not fire automatically in rapid succession; after firing one shot, the user must operate the mechanism again to fire the next round.

The concept of this Mauser bolt-action rifle was invented in 1836, and it is now considered an old design primarily used for hunting.

Typically, the internal magazine holds about 3 to 5 rounds, and at the crime scene, police found several unfired cartridges along with the spent casings.

This firearm has a slower rate of fire compared to modern semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15.

However, its simple design means fewer malfunctions, it can use various types of ammunition, and it is relatively inexpensive. Most importantly, it has high accuracy, making it popular for hunting and precision shooting.

Thus, the National Rifle Association (NRA) refers to it as "the most typical rifle action for military, hunting, and shooting purposes."

What is particularly shocking about this incident is that an assassination was carried out with just a single shot from such a non-automatic, old rifle.

The perpetrator took aim from a roof 130 meters away, resulting in Kirk sustaining fatal injuries and dying immediately.

According to eyewitnesses, after the gunshot rang out, the scene quickly descended into chaos, and the perpetrator fled the scene but has since been apprehended.

A reward of $100,000 was offered, and he turned himself in at the police station and is currently being held in custody for investigation.

So, is such a bolt-action rifle legal in the United States? To answer briefly, yes, it is legal.

Ultimately, this incident demonstrates how deadly the consequences can be, even without the latest semi-automatic weapons.

Regardless of the type of firearm, the irreversible consequences of a single bullet have been highlighted once again.

This incident is viewed by many as a 'political assassination,' raising concerns about political violence across the United States.

Not only were people shocked by Kirk's death, but the fact that such an event could occur with an old rifle has reignited discussions on gun control.
