
I've been thinking about this every day lately. I'm starting to worry as AI is getting better at coding.
However, to be honest, it's not necessarily true that "it becomes harder without exception."
After 55, the ability to maintain focus definitely shortens compared to physical stamina.
In the past, I could concentrate for 4 to 5 hours, but now I need to break it into 2 to 3-hour segments.
Especially in fields like IT, law, and finance, where detail and judgment are crucial, the ability to make quick and accurate decisions becomes more important than "the stamina to endure for long periods."
The second point is the feeling of falling behind in speed competition. Younger employees learn tools and multitask quickly.
Instead, we need to change our approach. We should focus on judgment, experience, and risk management rather than speed.
The third point is that while stress resilience improves, recovery slows down.
I'm less shaken by ordinary tasks, but once I accumulate significant fatigue, it takes a long time to recover.
When this accumulates, it feels like "work is overwhelming."
The fourth point is the issue of environment. From a company's perspective, employees in their late 50s may be seen as "high salary + slow to change."
Thus, the position within the organization becomes more burdensome than the work itself. It's often not about being unable to work, but rather being structurally pressured.
So, the conclusion is this: it's not that work becomes harder, but that it becomes harder if you continue to work in the same way.
Those who manage to endure well have something in common.
They reduce their working hours while increasing their decision-making influence. They shift from doing everything themselves to taking on roles that involve judgment and direction-setting.
They learn new technologies quickly, focusing only on the essentials. And above all, they reduce the amount of work they take on.
Conversely, cases that become more difficult are when individuals try to do everything themselves as before, reject new systems or AI, and do not reduce their workload.
To put it bluntly, after 55, it becomes more of a "strategic issue" than a "capability issue."
Even with the same abilities, how you use them can make things much easier or, conversely, suddenly overwhelming.
So, I think the answer to this question is whether you will continue in the same way or change your role.
