A central institution for introducing Korean culture and educating about the language and history of Korea.
The Seattle Korean Education Center is an institution established by the Korean government to educate Korean language and culture to Korean residents and youth in five states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska, fostering ethnic pride and identity as Korean Americans, while also supporting the dissemination of Korean language to students in local elementary, middle, and high schools.
The programs conducted by the Seattle Korean Education Center include Korean language adoption projects, support for Korean language schools, root education, lifelong education programs for adults, support for Korean cultural experiential learning, administration of the Korean Language Proficiency Test (TOPIK), and promotion of TaLK and government-funded students. We will strive to be a space for learning, communication, and cooperation for the Korean community and youth, while introducing and educating about the beauty of Korea in American schools and various educational institutions.
The Seattle Korean Education Center, which closed in 1999, has reopened after about 25 years, thanks to the continuous requests and support from the community.
In the meantime, the educational environment in the Northwest region, including the Korean community, has seen significant improvements. Various Korean language schools have been established for the second and third generations, and public elementary and secondary schools are expanding the introduction of Korean as a second foreign language. Recently, driven by the Korean Wave, clubs related to Korean culture, such as K-POP, have rapidly increased, and awareness of Korean universities has improved, with students often seen wearing Korean university jackets after studying abroad.
This educational environment is the result of the passion and dedication of many community members who have worked for decades to create opportunities for the next generation in the challenging American landscape, and I believe it is a valuable asset of Korea.
Our Seattle Korean Education Center will do its best to support the spread of the Korean language and culture in the Northwest region based on this excellent environment and to cultivate global talents who can operate on the stage of Korea, the U.S., and the world.
We will not only aim for quantitative expansion and qualitative improvement of the Korean language and culture programs that have been in operation but also actively promote smooth educational cooperation between Korea and the U.S. through communication and collaboration with various public and educational institutions located in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.
Dear community members, our education in the Northwest will now leap to a higher level. In the future, the Seattle Korean Education Center will work with you to create a better educational environment for the next generation.
