Differences Between Seminole and Orange School Districts in Orlando - Orlando - 1

As I prepare to move to Orlando and look into schools for my kids, it can be a bit overwhelming at first.

I thought there was only one school district in Orlando, but there are actually several districts within the area, including Orange County, Seminole County, Osceola County, and Lake County. However, once you take a closer look, it's not as complicated as it seems. If school districts are your top priority, it's best to start with Seminole County.

Seminole County public schools are often mentioned as one of the top-performing districts in Florida. Areas like Lake Mary, Oviedo, and Winter Springs are popular among families for this reason. It's not just that one school is good; the overall evaluation of the district is relatively stable, which is a plus.

However, there's one thing to be cautious about. Winter Park can easily be confused with Winter Springs due to their names, but they are different places. Winter Springs is in Seminole County, while what we commonly refer to as Winter Park and Winter Park High School are in Orange County. This can be a subtle confusion when looking into school districts in the U.S.

In Orange County, you'll often see Winter Park and Dr. Phillips. Dr. Phillips, in particular, attracts interest from Korean families not only for its schools but also for its living environment. It's convenient for dining and shopping, and the accessibility to central Orlando is decent. Dr. Phillips High School also offers an IB program, making it worth considering for families with middle and high school students.

However, when searching for good school districts, you'll ultimately notice a difference in home prices. Popular areas in Seminole County, like Lake Mary, often have homes that exceed $400,000 to $500,000. The same goes for Dr. Phillips. On the other hand, if you go to Osceola County or further out, you're likely to find larger and newer homes within the same budget. Ultimately, you'll have to decide whether to get an extra room or pay more for the school district.

If your budget is a bit tight, consider looking at Altamonte Springs as well. It offers a wider range of housing prices while still allowing you to find homes within Seminole County. However, just because you live in Seminole County doesn't mean all schools are equally good.

This is what I want to emphasize the most. Just because a real estate ad says "good school district" doesn't mean you should take it at face value. If you find a house you like, you should check the official School Zone or School Finder for that district to see which elementary, middle, and high schools your address is assigned to. Sometimes, a school can change just by crossing a street, and district boundaries can change as well.

Also, if you plan to move in the summer and start looking for schools in June, you might feel rushed. The application schedules and requirements for school choice, magnet programs, and transfers vary by program, so it's best to check a few months in advance. Especially if the school you want isn't the one assigned to your address, you'll need to act sooner.

If you're settling in Orlando with your child, don't start by looking at house photos. First, decide whether you want to be in Seminole or Orange, narrow down the schools, and then find homes assigned to those schools. If your child's school is important, it's better to look at district boundaries before a pretty kitchen; this is the starting point for finding a home in Orlando.
