Virginia has become an attractive settlement area for Korean immigrants due to its proximity to Washington D.C.
However, in recent years, noticeable changes in the Korean population have been observed. According to the 2022 American Community Survey (ACS) by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Korean population in Virginia was about 90,000, but the 2023 statistics show a slight decrease to 88,903. This indicates a generational shift and population movement within the Korean community.
These days, the second generation of immigrants is emerging as a key group, and it is said that Korean migration is ongoing across the U.S. Reasons such as marriage, parenting, employment, and the retirement of the previous generation continue to arise.
The Korean community in Virginia is mainly concentrated in the northern region.
The most representative area is Annandale, which is about a 20-minute drive from Washington D.C. This place is so densely populated with Koreans that it is practically referred to as 'Washington's Koreatown,' with Korean signs lining the streets. Restaurants, bakeries, beauty salons, churches, and Korean hospitals are all clustered within a single block, allowing newcomers to the U.S. to live without a language barrier. Especially on weekends, it is crowded with families visiting Korean restaurants, and traditional events are often held during holidays or commemorative days, making it a special neighborhood where one can feel Korean sentiment.
The next largest area is Centreville. Located within Fairfax County, this area has rapidly grown over the past decade and is referred to as 'the second Koreatown.' It is densely populated with large Korean supermarkets, churches, academies, dental offices, and real estate agencies, and has a higher proportion of young residents and families, giving it a slightly more modern atmosphere than Annandale. Its good transportation accessibility makes it a popular choice for Washington commuters as a residential area. Thanks to these regional characteristics, Centreville effectively serves as the living center of the Korean community in Northern Virginia.
The Korean community in Virginia is expanding not only in terms of population size but also in social influence. Various organizations, including the Korean American Society of Virginia, are actively working to promote the rights and cultural exchange of Koreans within the local community. Events like Lunar New Year celebrations, scholarship programs, and local volunteer activities have already received positive feedback from the local society.
Interestingly, there is an overall trend of change within the Korean community. As of 2023, the proportion of the population aged 65 and older has significantly increased to 17.7%, indicating a clear aging trend. In contrast, the proportion of young people is decreasing, which seems to reflect the movement of the younger generation relocating to other states for college or job changes. The median age has risen to 40, showing that the Korean community is gradually transforming into a more stable middle-aged demographic.
In terms of education and economic status, the Korean community in Virginia maintains a very solid foundation. The percentage of those with a college degree or higher is 60.3%, far exceeding the overall average in Virginia (42.2%). Additionally, the median household income is $116,713, which is higher than the state average of $85,873. This indicates that the Korean community values education, has a high proportion of professionals, and possesses a stable economic structure.
On a national scale, the Korean population is approximately 2,023,517, reflecting a 1.37% decrease from the previous year. The state with the largest Korean population is California (564,443), followed by New York, Texas, New Jersey, and Washington. Although Virginia's population is relatively small, it is regarded as a "small but strong community" due to its high education level and stable living foundation.
