As I approach 60, I notice that things I used to overlook are now coming back to me physically. Living in the U.S. and having lived carelessly in my youth, I realize that those days are over. When I was younger, my body could handle everything without much thought, but now, if I don't take care of myself, it shows immediately. Here are some things I've learned late in life.
First, cartilage is a consumable. Whether it's your knees or shoulders, once it wears down, it doesn't come back. If you push yourself too hard with running and squatting, you'll start suffering as soon as you hit 50.
Second, the habit of drinking and then falling asleep right away. This is a surefire way to ruin your face. Recovery doesn't happen. The next day, the accumulated fatigue shows, and after a few years, the difference is stark.
Third, sunlight. In LA, the weather is nice, so it's easy to let your guard down. If you go out without sunscreen, your skin ages quickly, not slowly. Dark spots and wrinkles will come.
Fourth, water. The habit of not drinking enough water becomes more noticeable as you age. Your skin and joints stiffen. You need to make sure to drink a certain amount every day.
Fifth, sleep. When I was younger, I could get by on 5 hours of sleep, but now, if that accumulates, my body breaks down immediately. Deep sleep is crucial at this point.
Sixth, reducing sugar intake. If you love sweets, you really need to cut back, even if it's late. You'll gain weight, inflammation builds up, and ultimately, your overall health declines.
Seventh, stretching. Sometimes it's even more important than exercise. If I don't stretch in the morning, I feel stiff all day long.
Eighth, reducing time spent sitting or especially lying down. I didn't realize before, but sitting for long periods negatively affects my back and circulation. I need to move around periodically.
Ninth, weight management. If I let my guard down even a little, I gain weight quickly. The problem is losing it is much harder. Maintenance is key.
Tenth, stress management. This really shows up in your body. It affects your face, digestion, and sleep. Just enduring it doesn't solve the problem.
Ultimately, I've realized one thing. My body doesn't just hold up for free; I'll have to pay the bill later. It feels like I'm paying the price for what I didn't understand when I was younger. However, it's not too late to learn now. If I manage myself little by little, I can definitely avoid breaking down as much. This is the reality I'm coming to understand as I near 60.
