These days, seeing AI create and sing songs makes me think, "Soon, all hit songs will be made by AI."
The era of AI creating songs is certainly coming, but it seems unlikely that it can completely replace humans. Music cannot be created solely through calculations; it is the human emotion that completes the final touch.
However, looking at how AlphaGo has already defeated all the world's Go masters, I cannot be 100% sure about this aspect.
If you ask AI to "create a bright and cheerful pop song," it can quickly produce a decent song. However, while these songs may sound fine, they often lack a deep emotional resonance. Hit songs are not just made up of melodies and words; they must capture the prevailing emotions, a sense that humans excel at.
Moreover, songs that are loved for a long time mostly stem from real experiences. Emotions felt in reality, such as first love, breakups, the process of achieving dreams, and feelings of failure, are embedded in them. AI can create lyrics based on data, but it struggles to convey the weight of a 'real story' because it lacks firsthand emotional experiences. Despite its advanced technology, it has limitations in creating the depth of sincerity.
That doesn't mean AI is meaningless. On the contrary, AI is significantly changing the way music is created. In the future, composers may not be the ones creating songs from start to finish, but rather directors who select the best melodies from hundreds generated by AI and enhance them with emotion to improve their quality. In other words, AI can draft a song, and humans can add emotion and personality to turn it into a finished piece.
Especially in the future, there is a high possibility of an era for individual musicians. Even without going through large agencies, not being skilled at playing instruments, or having learned composition, if one has ideas and emotions, AI can assist with the technical aspects. Just as YouTube has turned ordinary people into broadcast creators, AI can open up an era where anyone can create music.
AI singers have already emerged and will become even more natural in the future. They do not require actual practice, do not suffer from vocal strain or aging, and are unlikely to cause problems. For this reason, the music industry may actively utilize AI singers. However, the delicate expression of human emotions and heartfelt performances may still favor human singers.
Ultimately, the future of music is likely to be an era of cooperation rather than competition between AI and humans. AI will handle calculations and speed, while humans will manage emotion and personality. It can be seen that technology is not replacing art, but rather artists are beginning to use technology as a tool.
The future of the music industry that AI will open up is not about replacement but collaboration, and it can be seen as a change that broadens the path for new creators.
