When I want to escape from my busy daily life for a moment, I think of camping.
Once you experience the reset effect of that quiet time sitting by a campfire under the moonlight, it's hard to go back to city living.
Fortunately, there are various camping options well-equipped within a 30 to 60-minute drive from Annandale. Living in Annandale, known as the Koreatown of Virginia, offers a great advantage of having such access to nature. Today, I'll share the campgrounds I've personally checked out and used.
The most accessible place is Burke Lake Park Campground. This campground, operated directly by Fairfax County, is located right next to the beautiful Burke Lake. Fishing and boat rentals are available, and it features a 5-mile paved trail, a children's playground, a carousel, and a mini train, making it perfect for family visits. The serene scenery when the morning mist rises from the lake is unforgettable. Both tent sites and RV sites are available, and during spring and fall weekends, it can be hard to secure a site without a reservation. Summer weekends require even earlier bookings.
Pohick Bay Campground is located near Lorton and has a unique waterfront atmosphere near the Potomac River tributary.
Both tent and RV sites are available, and it's a year-round camping destination. In the summer, you can enjoy water recreation activities, and the fall foliage season offers beautiful views. Lake Fairfax Campground is located in Reston and operates seasonally from March to September. It has both drive-in and walk-in sites, allowing you to choose according to your preferred camping style. Sites near the water are particularly popular, so early reservations are important.

Greenbelt Park is in Maryland, but it's close enough for a day trip camping from Annandale.
This campground, operated by the National Park Service (NPS), maintains a quiet atmosphere nestled in a lush forest despite being near the urban area.
Cedarville State Forest is located in Maryland and is an economical option for basic facility camping. Both locations allow for advance reservations through an online booking system. Especially Greenbelt Park, being near the DC and Maryland border, can be utilized when planning a trip that combines DC travel and camping.
Virginia State Park camping is recommended when you want a more special nature experience.
According to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), there are over 1,800 camping sites across 29 state parks in Virginia. Full-service campgrounds (with bathrooms) operate from the first Friday in March to the first Monday in December, while Douthat, Hungry Mother, Pocahontas, and Shenandoah River state parks operate year-round. It's a 1 to 1.5-hour drive from Annandale to the Shenandoah Valley state parks.
Shenandoah National Park is a bit further away but definitely worth the effort.
The drive along Skyline Drive and the experience at the camping sites are among the best in eastern U.S. nature camping. During the fall foliage season, securing a site can be very difficult, so it's essential to make reservations months in advance. The sunrise experienced here is truly special. The real advantage of this location is being able to make a one-night trip to such places from Annandale.
Spending a night in nature is not just a simple leisure activity; it's a precious time to slow down the pace of daily life and find your original rhythm. That time, flowing gently like a moonlit river, ultimately becomes the energy to live better when you return to the city. The variety of options around Annandale makes me love living here even more. Plan where to go this weekend!
