Many people think of rest as just lying in bed doing nothing, scrolling on their phones, or zoning out. I used to think that was what resting meant. I believed that doing nothing and being still was rest. However, my perspective has changed a bit lately. I feel that true rest is not just a time to stop, but rather a time to rebalance life. As we live, there are moments when our hearts and lives tilt to one side, just like a scale, and I think rest is the process of carefully adjusting that back.

It's easy to understand when you think about a home office. If a room is filled to the brim with a desk, chair, computer, printer, file cabinet, cables, file boxes, and decorations, it may look like a space of someone who is working hard. But when you actually work in that space, it's hard to concentrate, and it feels suffocating. You realize that when the space is cramped, your mind feels cramped too.

Therefore, a good home office is not just a space filled with items, but it needs to have intentionally left empty spaces. There should be a blank wall, an empty floor, and areas where the eyes can rest for the room to breathe, and for the person in that space to also take a break.

I think life is very similar to this. A schedule that is completely filled with no empty slots, packed with goals, responsibilities, and obligations may initially seem very productive, but if that state continues for too long, it will inevitably collapse. A life filled with work, money, relationships, plans, and achievements starts to lose efficiency over time, and you easily get tired even from trivial matters. I feel that this is not due to laziness, but because the structure itself is already overloaded.

So, I believe that rest is not just a time to do nothing, but a process of creating space in life again. It is a time to organize thoughts, sort out emotions, and readjust my pace. Just like clearing out unnecessary items in a home office, I think rest is the process of pausing to let go of unnecessary worries and impatience.

This space is necessary for the next focus to thrive. Just as you need to take a proper breath to run again. Someone who runs without stopping may seem strong, but they cannot last long. Conversely, someone who knows how to leave some space can quietly endure, but for a long time.

Rest is neither giving up nor running away. Rather, it is a time to recalibrate life to live better. Sometimes, I feel it is necessary to look back at my life as if I were examining a home office, checking whether my life is too packed or if there is still room to breathe. You need to empty to fill, and you need to stop to regain balance. Therefore, I believe that rest is not a choice but a necessary process.
