The Ross Dock Picnic Area in Palisades Interstate Park is such an attractive place that it makes you wonder if there can be such a relaxing space so close to the city. Located right next to the Hudson River, on clear days, you can see the Manhattan skyline across the river.

That morning, I drove down with a cup of coffee, and it turned out to be closer to the city than I expected. As soon as I passed the George Washington Bridge, I found the park entrance, making it an easy trip from anywhere in New York or New Jersey.

As the name suggests, Ross Dock is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic. It has a large parking lot, grassy areas, tables, and barbecue grills, making it great for families, as well as for couples or friends looking to have a picnic.

The day I went was a Saturday, and many families were already grilling meat while kids were riding their bikes and running around. If you walk towards the Hudson River, there are flat rocks under the shade of trees where you can sit and enjoy the breeze, and it's quite charming to read a book or unpack a lunch there. The water is calm, and the boats and yachts passing by in front of you create a picturesque scene.

In the distance, you can see the Manhattan skyline, and it's amazing that you can't hear any city noise, only the sounds of water and birds. The path from the park entrance to Ross Dock is a bit steep, but you can drive down, and there are viewpoints along the way where you can stop and take in the scenery.

Especially at sunset, the sky turns red, and the light reflects off the Hudson River, creating a golden glow that is truly overwhelming. Many people come at that time to take photos, and even with a smartphone, you can capture stunning shots.

The restrooms in the park are well-maintained, and there are plenty of trash cans conveniently placed, making it easy to use. Above all, the charm of Ross Dock is that it is surrounded by nature but without any inconvenience. There are restaurants and cafes nearby, and just a short drive up, you can enjoy a drive along the Palisades Interstate Parkway. In fact, many people don't just use Ross Dock as a simple picnic spot but also as a starting point for the trail that follows the Palisades Cliffs.

In the cool autumn weather, the leaves turn red along the cliffs, making it look like a scene from a movie. When the river breeze gets a bit chilly, sitting on a bench with a warm cup of coffee feels more peaceful and serene than any café. Before the sun completely sets, the lights of the George Washington Bridge start to turn on one by one, and the reflection of that light on the river is so beautiful that I stood there for a while just watching.

I felt that there is no better place for weary city dwellers to take a break. I decided that next time, I should come here with friends to grill some meat.
