These days, it seems like everyone around me is wearing an Apple Watch.
At first, I thought, "Why is this watch so expensive?" But once I tried it or saw it up close, I realized it's not just a simple watch. Today, I'll casually discuss how the Apple Watch has evolved and what realistic drawbacks it has alongside its advantages.
The Apple Watch was first unveiled in 2014 and officially launched in 2015. Back then, many people wondered, "Is this really necessary?" but now it has become one of Apple's flagship products. The first-generation model focused on basic health management features like heart rate monitoring and exercise tracking, along with serving as a secondary device for checking iPhone notifications. The digital crown, a small wheel for zooming in or scrolling, was introduced at that time.
Since then, it has gradually become smarter almost every year. The Series 2, released in 2016, added GPS, eliminating the need to carry an iPhone while exercising, and its waterproof capabilities improved to the point where swimming became possible. Starting with the Series 3 in 2017, cellular models were introduced, allowing users to make calls and send texts without an iPhone.
The Series 4, released in 2018, is considered a significant change in the history of the Apple Watch. The screen became larger, the design was refined, and features like ECG and fall detection were added, marking its transition from a simple wearable to a health management device.
Subsequent models continued to evolve by adding features while maintaining a consistent framework. The Series 5 introduced an always-on display, and the Series 6 added blood oxygen monitoring. The introduction of the SE model also broadened the options at a lower price point.
With the latest models, it feels like the user experience has improved more than the features. The screen is brighter, charging speed has increased, and health management features have become more sophisticated. The Ultra model, in particular, is designed for outdoor activities like hiking and diving, with significantly enhanced battery life and durability.
Overall, the Apple Watch can be seen as a product that has steadily evolved with a focus on health management and convenience. It tracks almost all aspects of daily life, including heart rate, exercise, sleep patterns, and activity levels. Some people even say, "Wearing it makes me feel like I'm managing my health."
However, it's not without its drawbacks. The most commonly mentioned downside is the price. Even the basic model is quite expensive, and opting for cellular or premium models can be a significant financial burden.
Battery life is another practical concern. Many users find that they need to charge it after about a day of use, which can be inconvenient for those accustomed to smartwatches that last several days without charging.
Additionally, the Apple Watch is primarily designed for iPhone users. Android users essentially cannot use it, as it relies on integration with the iPhone for its features to function properly.
First-time users might find the interface a bit complicated. With so many features, it takes some time to get used to the settings and menus. It's also advisable to view health data as a reference. Expecting medical-grade accuracy is unrealistic; it's better to think of it as a tool for lifestyle management.
Despite this, the reason the Apple Watch continues to gain popularity is clear. It has established itself as a device that goes beyond just telling time, recording and managing daily life. It encourages exercise, reminds you to get up if you've been sitting too long, and even alerts you if your heart rate is abnormal.
Ultimately, I believe the Apple Watch is not an essential product but rather a device that suits those who want to manage their lifestyle a bit more. Once you start using it, you find it surprisingly convenient, and without it, you might feel a little lost. Perhaps that's why so many people are eagerly awaiting the next model.
