These days, I get startled when I look in the mirror.
Just 3-4 years ago, I seemed to have fewer wrinkles and a bit more elasticity... But one day, my eyes started to droop, the nasolabial folds deepened, and my facial contours no longer looked the same. In just a year or two, it feels like time has rushed in all at once. I'm not the only one. When I chat with friends over lunch, I often hear, "Oh, you too?" "I suddenly felt my face collapse three years ago!"
Why do we age so suddenly?
In fact, facial aging doesn't happen overnight. Most people manage to hold on until their mid-40s, but by their early 50s, they start to feel drastic changes. This is due to hormones. Especially for women, estrogen, the female hormone, drops sharply around menopause, leading to noticeable declines in skin elasticity and moisture retention. Collagen decreases, skin becomes dry, and elasticity diminishes... In short, 'the face sags.'
The next frightening thing is 'fat redistribution.' In your 20s and 30s, a plump face makes you look youthful, but after 50, fat begins to sag downwards, disrupting the jawline. Cheeks hollow out, the jawline droops, and lines known as 'marionette lines' appear below the corners of the mouth. When friends say, "You look tired these days," it's actually due to these changes.
Another point to consider is that facial aging is connected to overall body health. A doctor at a clinic in Pell Park once said that the face is a mirror of the internal organs. If the liver, kidneys, or stomach are not in good condition, it shows on the skin. If you continue to live a lifestyle of late-night snacks, staying up late, and stress in your 50s, your body won't recover as it used to, and it will show on your face.
The decline in sleep quality during this period also plays a role. Many experience sleep disorders after menopause. If you can't get deep sleep, the secretion of growth hormones decreases, which in turn reduces skin regeneration ability. Even if you use the same cosmetics, the results are not the same for these reasons.
Another thing to think about is facial expression habits. I have a habit of raising only one corner of my mouth when I smile, and these days, I notice that the nasolabial fold on that side is much deeper. The more time spent with a neutral expression, the less facial muscles move, leading to more sagging, while those who frown tend to develop deeper wrinkles around the eyes or between the brows. Considering how expressionless we often are while staring at our smartphones, the results are quite obvious.
So nowadays, I practice smiling in front of the mirror at least once or twice a day. Using facial muscles is also a form of exercise. Additionally, as I learned at the clinic, I am consistently doing 'elasticity massages' at home. While it may not have dramatic effects, it seems to at least slow down the rate of sagging.
Above all, managing stress is crucial - stress governs the face. If you have a lot of worries, you truly end up with a 'worry-laden face.' In the past, I could sleep well after a stressful day and feel fine, but these days, it shows on my face. And starting another day with that face only decreases my confidence... it's a vicious cycle.
So every morning, I look in the mirror and tell myself, "It's okay. I'm going to live well today." Even though my face has changed a bit over the years, those are just traces of the time I've lived, not signs of being broken. I've decided to think of it as a sign of having gained a bit of wisdom.
And if there are others who are struggling with the same concerns, I want to say this: never compare yourself to others. The filtered faces on Instagram are not reality, and celebrity skin is the result of expensive treatments. We just need to manage ourselves at our own pace and to the best of our ability.
We can be beautiful in our 50s too. However, that beauty is not the 'firmness' of our 20s, but a subtle beauty that comes from the habits of care. Aging is inevitable, but how we age is something we can choose.
Let's try to smile today. A single smile is a better anti-aging remedy than any cosmetic.
