Living in Lexington, I've definitely realized that this city has a surprisingly rich calendar of events throughout the year.
Due to its image as the city of horses and bourbon, it's easy to think of it as a quiet rural town, but once you live here, you'll find that there are annual events to catch from spring to winter filling the calendar. Here's a seasonal breakdown of the major events. 🐎
The start of spring is marked by the Keeneland Spring Horse Racing Season.
Typically held for about four weeks starting in early April, during this time, the entire Lexington area buzzes with horse racing excitement.
Keeneland is known for its unique atmosphere among racetracks in the U.S.
It operates without commercial advertising, and there are no announcers during the races, just the natural sounds of the environment.
Many spectators dress in formal attire, giving it a feel reminiscent of England's Ascot.
During the spring season, races like the Ashland Stakes and Transylvania Stakes serve as pre-races for the Kentucky Derby, attracting enthusiasts from across the country.
General admission is just $5, allowing visitors to spread out picnic mats on the lawn and enjoy the day, making it perfect for family outings.
In the summer, the Railbird Music Festival is a must-see.
This festival, held at The Red Mile Racetrack, is a large music festival that encompasses indie, rock, country, and bluegrass genres.

The sight of the expansive lawn inside the racetrack transforming into a concert venue is unique.
Held every summer, it features numerous main stage and side stage performances over two days.
Kentucky bourbon and local food booths are also available, allowing attendees to enjoy music and food simultaneously. In June, the Festival of the Bluegrass is also held at the Kentucky Horse Park. This bluegrass festival, in the heart of bluegrass music, offers a chance to experience the essence of local culture. Many participants camp and stay for 3-4 days, creating a very relaxed atmosphere.
In the fall, the Keeneland Fall Horse Racing Season returns. The fall season, held throughout October, typically features even more spectacular races than the spring.
The scenery of the Kentucky Bluegrass region, adorned with autumn leaves, makes the racetrack itself a picturesque landscape. Enjoying a drive through the horse farms near Keeneland during this time allows you to experience the essence of Kentucky in the fall. Additionally, the annual Keeneland Sales takes place in the fall.
This auction event, where buyers from around the world gather, is one of the largest thoroughbred auctions in the world, with transactions worth millions of dollars. General public can enter the auction house to observe, providing a unique experience to grasp the scale of the horse industry.
Winter primarily showcases the UK basketball season as the top attraction. Kentucky Wildcats basketball is almost a religion for the citizens of Lexington. Home games at Rupp Arena are nearly always sold out, and the energy of Big Blue Nation can be overwhelming at first glance.
In December, the Christmas at Ashland event takes place at Ashland Estate. This mansion, once the home of 19th-century politician Henry Clay, is beautifully decorated and opened to the public during the Christmas season. It's a cozy event that allows you to feel both the history of Lexington and the holiday spirit. While it may seem like life in Lexington is quiet, filling the annual events calendar reveals that there are hardly any months without activities. 😄
