Talking about Lexington's weather honestly makes me sigh.
It seems similar to Korea but is completely different, and just when you think you've adapted, it feels like a sudden blow to the back of the head.
However, living in this city, you definitely feel the seasons come alive.
The climate is humid subtropical (Cfa), which sounds gentle, but the reality is a sweltering summer and a damp chill in winter.
The average in January is between 24 and 41 degrees Fahrenheit, so it feels quite cold, while July and August see temperatures of 85 to 90 degrees, and with the humidity, you sweat just standing still.
Annual rainfall is about 53 inches, so it rains consistently, and there are many days when you think, 'It won't rain today,' only to be caught in a downpour.
Snow is about 10 inches, which isn't a lot, but the problem is the ice storms. When rain freezes, the roads turn into glass, making it much more dangerous than snow.
Spring is a different story. From March to May, it is truly beautiful. The green is particularly vivid, which is a characteristic of the Bluegrass region. During this time, the Keeneland horse racing season takes place, with great weather, a lively atmosphere, and people dressing up.
However, it's also allergy season, so you'll be looking for masks. Fall is similarly pleasant.
From September to November, the fall foliage is quite a sight, and the Keeneland fall racing season begins again. So, spring and fall are really nice, but the problem lies with summer and winter. Summer drains your energy due to the humidity, and winter brings ice rather than snow, along with unpredictable weather changes throughout the day.
For the most accurate weather updates, it's best to check the National Weather Service. Especially the Louisville-Lexington forecast reflects reality well.
Personally, I feel that in this city, you need to carry an umbrella not just occasionally but almost as a basic item.
A waterproof jacket is also necessary regardless of the season. In summer, you can't survive without air conditioning, and in winter, you can't endure without heating. And for those with cars, an ice scraper is a must. The saying that ice is scarier than snow makes sense once you experience it here.
But strangely, there are moments that offset this hardship. The green fields in spring, the fall foliage, and the atmosphere during racing season.
Once you see this, you think, 'Oh, living here isn't so bad after all.' The weather is tricky, but it's a city that grows on you as you live here.
