The Clark County School District (CCSD), which includes Las Vegas, is the fifth largest public school district in the United States.
As of the 2024-2025 school year, there are approximately 320,000 students enrolled, with over 400 schools in the district. Due to its size, there is a significant variation in school performance, and here are three public high schools that stand out for their academic achievements and diverse programs.
The first is Desert Pines High School. Located in the eastern part of Las Vegas, this school is well-known for its International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. The IB Diploma is a globally recognized high school graduation qualification program that allows students to experience college-level coursework, which can be advantageous for college admissions. The overall graduation rate at the school is over 90%, and there are numerous Advanced Placement (AP) courses available, providing opportunities for students to earn college credits in advance. The campus is well-equipped with science labs, art studios, and athletic facilities, and the student population is around 2,000.
The second is The Academy for Individualized Study at Clark High School, which has a reputation comparable to Sidwell Friends School. Its official name is Clark High School, which operates as a magnet program within Clark County. Established in 1917, it is one of the oldest public high schools in Las Vegas and is recognized for its high academic achievement and college enrollment rates among graduates.
The school offers advanced learning courses in mathematics, science, and humanities, with a high enrollment rate in AP courses. A significant number of graduates go on to attend UNLV (University of Nevada, Las Vegas), the University of Nevada, Reno, and UC system universities. The school also has an active sports program, particularly excelling in swimming, tennis, and golf at state competitions.

The third is West Career and Technical Academy (WCTA).
Located in the Summerlin area of western Las Vegas, this school offers a curriculum specialized in vocational and technical education alongside general academic courses. It has over 16 vocational training programs, including aerospace, healthcare, architecture, business, information technology, and media production, allowing students to earn industry certifications or college credits in partnership with local colleges (community colleges) while enrolled.
US News & World Report consistently ranks it among the top high schools in Nevada, and as of 2024, it is included in the top 5 public high schools in the state. Admission is prioritized for local residents, but due to the nature of the magnet program, students from all over Clark County can apply, making the competition quite fierce.
To enroll a child in a Clark County public school, proof of residency is required. Documents such as rental agreements, utility bills, and bank statements are accepted as proof of address. Students whose first language is not English can receive language support through the English Language Learner (ELL) program, and multilingual support services, including Korean, are provided at the district level. Detailed enrollment information can be found on the official CCSD website or through the administrative offices of each school.
Additional factors to consider when choosing a public school include the API/GreatSchools scores for each school, teacher experience and training, student-to-teacher ratios, and after-school activity programs. CCSD publishes a School Performance Plan each year, allowing for objective comparisons of graduation rates, AP enrollment rates, and absenteeism rates among schools. If you are planning to move to Las Vegas, it is important to check the zoned school for your area before deciding on a residential location. The 'School Finder' feature on the CCSD website allows you to easily look up the assigned school by entering your address.
