Recently, Minnesota has been in turmoil due to a large-scale embezzlement scandal involving public assistance funds.

This is known as the Feeding Our Future case. During the COVID period, money allocated by the government for children's meals was systematically stolen in a massive incident.

When schools closed due to the COVID crisis in 2020, the federal government released a significant budget to provide food for low-income children, which was managed by the Minnesota Department of Education. However, taking advantage of lax oversight, several nonprofit organizations and individuals colluded to submit false reports claiming, "We provided meals to children."

In reality, there were no children, the companies were fake, and the lists were entirely fabricated. This was first revealed in 2021 through an internal whistleblower, and in 2022, the FBI raided related facilities, turning it into a nationwide scandal.

As of early 2022, 47 people had been indicted, and the amount of money they embezzled was about $250 million. They decorated empty warehouses to look like meal sites and submitted absurd documents claiming thousands of children were fed daily. The money received did not go to children's meals but flowed into luxury homes, foreign cars, jewelry, and overseas real estate.

Particularly noteworthy in this case is that many of the main perpetrators were Somali immigrants. A significant number of those indicted were U.S. citizens of Somali descent, and they organized a network centered around relatives and acquaintances. They established multiple shell companies, shared fake children's lists, and exchanged false documents. They exploited the trust built by nonprofit organizations within the community to penetrate the weaknesses of the government system, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars being siphoned off in a short period.

After this incident, Minnesota's Somali community was also deeply shocked. Even the majority of hardworking immigrants began to be viewed with suspicion, and voices within the community grew louder, calling for a proper understanding of why this happened. This incident starkly illustrated how the crimes of a few individuals can leave scars on an entire community.

The trial process was almost cinematic. One defendant was caught trying to bribe a juror with a bag of cash to manipulate the verdict. This led to additional charges of judicial interference, and as trials continued into 2024, dozens were convicted. Even in 2026, the federal government continues to track down the money that was embezzled overseas and those who fled.

This incident also shook the political landscape. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated, "We have been working to resolve the issues," but faced criticism for inadequate oversight. With the Trump administration taking office, a large-scale federal investigation into Minnesota was initiated, and the atmosphere became even more tense.

Ultimately, Governor Walz decided to forgo a third term in 2026. He stated he would focus on state governance rather than the election and acknowledged that an organized fraud group had exploited the state's leniency. At the same time, he countered that the federal investigation was a political attack.

President Trump, on the other hand, took a hardline stance. He publicly criticized, "A massive fraud organization in Minnesota grew under the neglect of the Democratic administration," and mobilized the Department of Justice, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Health and Human Services to push the investigation forward. As of now, 98 people have been indicted, and 64 of them have already been convicted.

Thousands of subpoenas and hundreds of search warrants have been executed, and investigations have expanded to medical and caregiving companies. Child care subsidies have been frozen nationwide, and various grants to Minnesota have been halted.

Currently, Minnesota is completely overhauling its systems. All nonprofit organizations must pass real-time location verification, thorough receipt submissions, and artificial intelligence fraud detection systems to receive funds. Nevertheless, the aftermath of this incident has left a lingering atmosphere of suspicion even towards genuinely good organizations.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a representative case of how a slight loosening of management during a crisis can lead to significant disasters. The fact that money intended for children's meals was transformed into someone's sports car and mansion stands as a warning that no public funds in the U.S. should be wasted.
