If you've decided to move to Burbank, there are a lot of tasks ahead of you. I will share the checklist based on my experience.
Let's start with what needs to be done before the move. First, decide on your living area and type of housing (apartment vs. single-family home). The optimal location varies based on school districts, job locations, budget, and family composition. It's important to study the characteristics of different areas in Burbank and visit them in person to get a feel for the neighborhoods.
Second, prepare your Social Security Number (SSN). You will need an SSN for rental agreements, opening bank accounts, and employment. If you don't have one yet, it's the first document you should obtain. In some cases, you can use an ITIN as a substitute, but having an SSN is much more convenient.
Third, hurry to obtain your driver's license. Burbank is a city where living without a car can be difficult. You need to pass both the written and driving tests at the California DMV. If you have a Korean driver's license, some procedures may be simplified. You can also take the written test in Korean.
Now, here are the tasks to complete right after the move. First, apply for electric and water services with Burbank Water and Power (BWP). You can contact them at (818) 238-3700 or apply at burbankwp.com. You need to adjust the service start date to match your moving date.
Second, apply for gas service with SoCalGas (Southern California Gas Company). This is necessary for using gas appliances like stoves, ovens, and heaters. You can apply at 1-800-427-2200 or socalgas.com.
Third, you need to change your vehicle registration to California. You must obtain a California driver's license and vehicle registration at the DMV within 20 days of moving to California. Missing this deadline may result in fines. A vehicle inspection (Smog Check) is also required.
Fourth, report your address change to the USPS. By applying for a Change of Address on the USPS website (usps.com), your mail will be forwarded from your old address to your new one. You also need to inform your bank, insurance company, and employer about your address change.
Fifth, register your children for school. Contact the BUSD district office or the relevant school to start the enrollment process. You will need immunization records, proof of birth date, and proof of address. Be sure to prepare your academic records from your school in Korea as well.
Sixth, choose a primary care physician and check on dental and eye care options. Once you receive your health insurance card, it's a good idea to designate a primary care physician and schedule regular check-ups. It's wiser to prepare in advance rather than looking for a doctor when you're already sick.
